So im going to be replacing my 31 inch laramie ATs with 33 inches. I really like the look of the MT but i know they arnt practical for the road. Its not my DD but it will be mostly street driven with alot of action in deep sand (beach) and ice/mild snow in winter. I would think MTs would be awesome on the beach and pretty good in snow, not sure with ice. Like i said, i realize my use indicates the use of ATs but i like the look of MTs. I was looking at firestone destination MTs, Mud Rovers or MTRs. Which is best for my usage as far as wear? Im basically looking for a really heavy AT/ Watered down MT. The laramies i have now are really awesome in the snow/ice and sand so i just wanna make sure they look nice and are as good or better. Thanks. My friends looking for the same for his bronco too so any advice is appreiciated.

Edit: I probably will be doing mild wheeling soon too so. And i would like to play in shallow mud when i see it.

If you are serious about the sand, A/Ts are actually the best for sand because they won't dig. I think BFG A/Ts are great for what you need. Cheap and they last forever.

I do have to say though my Mickey Thompson MTZs are the best tire I have ever owned. Really good street manners and awsome wet weather traction along with snow/ice traction. However in loose sand they tend to dig, but otherwise they look badass :saweet:

I dunno, I run muds on mine in pretty much the same conditions you are talking about (sand excepted,) and it is a dd. I don't know a lot about the tires you mentioned, I haven't run any of those, but I run the Standard Pro Comp MT's and they have good street manners without being too noisy. They are also fine in the snow and on ice. No doubt there are better ice tires and certainly better street tires, but I'm really happy with them as an multipurpose tire. They also seem to be wearing pretty well, but then I'm only doing about 10k/year so I am getting some time out of them.

For wheeling, if your rig is stock, 33x10.5 is going to be your best bet without modifying the truck in any way, and BFG AT or MT are the only options in that size AFAIK.

Aired down BFG AT's seem to do pretty good off-road for me so far in shallow snow and mud. Ran 20PSI this last hunting season, and they rode nice and smooth. :)

thanks for the input as always. As i said, i like the look of mts but if they really dig in the sand i cant have that. Need to be functional too. I see alot of beach driving here in summer. Thanks for the tire suggestions, ill check em out, any others i should look at?

Not much of a sand runner, just not sure if the extra 2" of tread width (or more if aired down) from the 33x12.5's would be a better bet for you than the narrower. I didn't want any rubbing, and to keep my tires, suspension and sheet metal stock, and the BFG's were the only choice. I think there is one more out there, Interco or someone, that turns out another 33x10.5 or similar size, but they are more aggressive and probably not as good on the road.

They aren't any narrower than your 31's, so short of tread pattern and stiffness, 33's in the same width will act the same. If what you've got now cuts it in the traction department, then some AT's should be fine IMO.

The BFG AT's on mine have worn like iron, and handle awesome on the street. Certainly a trade off on street manners and traction. Curious to see if others have had the BFG AT's on the beach and their results.

i would imagine bfg ats would prob be good on the sand if mine are now, i always hear good things about bfgs and nothing about what i have now

Yeah I forgot to mention that BFG A/Ts are available in the 33x10.5 size. I have them on a 72 GMC without a lift.....no rubbing and they've been great tires.

I have 265/75R16 ATZ's. They do well just about everywhere. Mine are doing very well after 30K+

The Mickey Thompson ATZ?

I've been curious about them for a while now. I'd like to compare them to the BFG A/T.

mud tires are like auto insurance, you hate to spend the money on it cause you know you will rarely ever need it, but first time you have to use it its well worth it
