i am fixing to open it up and install my 4.56 gears. what kind of locker do i need for some light trails and mud? mostly street but i would like some type of locker. i can get a factory style govlock reasonable. what about lincoln lockers how well would some welded up gears last on the street? thats probably a no no. but lookin for infinate advice from all the K5 guru's

well since your running 35's I dont think I would waste the money upgradin the 10 bolt. Your best bet would be to probaly step up to 3/4 tons. Or if you wanna stick to 1/2 tons you could get a 14sf.

X2 By The Time You Spend The Money On Gears And A Locker, You Could Find A 14 Bolt For The Rear For Cheap. Unless You Already Have The Gears. Some 14 bolts came with 4.56's and a Detroit.

I have a lockright in mine...I've never had any problems. You will need to adjust your driving in the rain...but thats true wiht most any locker.

Thanks i actually have the gears and i plan to buy some ton axles i got a bead on if the timing is right. but if this falls thru i was gonna just work on the 10's

Yeah I'd look for a 12bolt. While they might not be much stronger as far as holding a tire goes they are stronger in the r&p.

$200 lunbox lockers - You'll know they are there on the street.

$500 detroits - Unlock around turns and you wont know the difference.

Lincoln locker will burn your tires up. Same with a spool.

Just go with a lockrite. Its a good cheap locker for a 10 bolt. They replace the spiders so they are easy to install. You can usually get them cheap on Ebay.
If you want more strength get a detroit locker. But they are pricy.

get a 14 bolt and weld that bitch up! - 200 bucks tops

Convert teh front to 8 lug to match... - 200 via wrecking yard tops.

Dont waste your time with a locked 10 bolt and 35's...
I couldnt even give 2 - 10 bolts away here...

If you are going to swap axles dont waste your money on anything but a 14 full floater for the rear and whatever you can afford for the front. 14BFF are cheap and easily available. Either weld it or put a detroit in it and call it good. Not sure about what to put in a 10 bolt, I would just spend the money to swap. You will spend more because you will have to get at least different rims, most likely tires as well.

i i want the ton gear but i will need new rims and tires as i am running 35/12.50/15s and i'll need 8 lug rims and i aint aware of any 15 inch 8 lug wheels but maybe there are some out there? so my tires would be usless as well

15" 8 lugs are out there and do fit a 14FF, might have to do some shaving depending on if you stay drum or go disk. If you do a dana 60 front you will have to shave a lot to fit a 15" wheel. If you have the option to sell your rim and tire package now and get the 1 tons go that route, if not I would probably just stick with a limited slip in your 10 bolt depending on how much street driving you do, how heavy your foot is and if you wheel hard.

thanks lak probably gonna stick to 10's and just ride this queen around i now got a bead on a good crawler blazer i might buy to bash!!!!!

Cool it is hard to decide what to do and most recommend upgrading but for a lot of people its not always the answer. Good luck with it and keep us posted!

yeah its a big price jump for me considering not even 2 weeks ago i bought the new bfgs for my small rims. so i kinda stuck for a little while but i might buy some and let them sit around till i can find some deals on wheels and tires

After seeing what my buddy did to his stock 10 bolt, I'd never recommend putting any money into them to anyone. I'd save the coin for upgrading your axles. If you're set on it, do it cheap & weld it up. My buddy blew the carrier thru the diff cover, literally.
