I pulled off the hubs and spindles, to replace the seals, and then removed the shafts so I could pull out the carrier to replace the inner axle seals on my front Dana 60 in my 1990 K5 Blazer. When I took the bearing caps off, I had to catch the carrier so it didn't hit me on the head. No case spreader required . . . . .

Should I replace the bearings??? Is that fairly normal?

Needs more side shims. I would be inspecting everything very close though.

My blazer's front diff has been this way for many years.

That means there is zero (or less) carrier bearing preload, which is bad. Bad for bearings and makes your ring and pinion weaker as it allows the gears to deflect more.

Shims are one way to correct it but more likely your bearings are worn causing the play, the factory set it up much tighter than that. FWIW, you're probably in for replacing carrier bearings anyway to change shims.

I just bought new bearings and races. Gonna throw them on tomorrow hopefully.

Was yours previously regeared?

I suspect mine was at one time and spread more than it should have been.

Done what we could but in the end, its holding together.

Ive had a couple diff's where the carrier pretty well fell out, both were high mileage and well abused axles. They didnt appear to be overlyloose, just not tight.

My D60 pretty well fell apart, I noticed that the bearings had been changed. It could have been they put any carrier pre load on it before final assembly??? Just a thought :dunno:

I replaced the carrier bearings back then.

My pinion bearings are gone now.

Mine is some what loose, not fall out loose, but a slight push with a pry bar and out it comes. Been this way for about ten years.
