Loose door lock

The little lock handle (up down dealy the person uses to lock/unlock) on the passenger side is pretty floppy. About half the time, just closing the door will cause it to drop down and lock. Any suggestions where to start looking?
 
Aren't there little plastic keepers that hold the rods in place to the inside of the door? I would check there first, I haven't pulled the panels on mine so it's just a shot in the dark.
 
Raising this back up. I guess I've lived with it for two years, maybe I'll try harder to fix it now. Any ideas before I just tear into it?

I just tore my door apart to get at the lock cylinder, but it's not like you can see much inside there unfortunately. The lock cylinders themselves don't take a bunch of force to turn if in good shape, but I would think they'd provide some resistance to locking. There must be a spring or tension inherent in the design somehow to provide resistance to turning, even all lubed up they don't move smoothly, there is a period of decent resistance as the lock mechanism is moved.

My guess it's in the actual mechanism the lock cylinder and lock knob rod (the technical term for that part, lol). The key works as it should? If you leave the key in the cylinder and shut the door, does it do it's trick still? Does the key turn?
 
It all works fine, it's just loose. It's loose when turning the key and loose when pulling the knob. The other side clearly has some sort of detent that keeps it up or down. I hate tearing the panel off because of the way it's held on, and it's always disappointing how little access it buys you. I'm going to go do it anyway though. I'll report back if I figure it out.
 
I figured it out. My passenger side is loose and the driver's side works. I pulled the cylinder from the driver's side and the detent function remains, even with the cylinder out. Looking very closely, there is a small spring in the actuator assembly that is missing on my passenger side. It's at the first "hinge" place where the rod from the pull knob comes down. I checked LMC and I can't find anything in their catalog between the pull knob and the cylinder. I also have no idea how I'd replace it even if I had one. Can all that assembly be removed somehow? Would GM be so cruel as to assemble the vehicles by welding on the inner skin after installing the lock stuff?
 
I think it will all come out, that mechanism isn't that large. Window up (most likely), disconnect the key cylinder and lock rod, unbolt, pull out through the large access holes would be my guess.
 
Looks like maybe it could all come out if you unbolted one of the bolts on the side of the door. Thing is, the door latch stuff is all connected there too, so I'd be pulling out a lot more than just lock stuff. I think I'd try to do the micro-surgey with it installed first, if I can find a spring.
 
Just to wrap this thread up, here's a pic of the assembly and the spring that does the detent function. My current assembly is missing this spring somehow, must have broken at some point. This assembly is attached to the side of the door by three screws and controls the lock functions as well as the door latching/opening. I haven't found out how painful it is to swap just yet...

So you just need a rotary latch mechanism from another door. Easy peasy...ask here for someone with a f-ed up door to send you one. Send @bix a pm he has some '90 K5 doors he is stripping and scrapping.
 
This pic is of a replacement I bought from ebay. $25. The spring looks challenging to swap, so I'm planning to swap this whole thing for what's there. It's soaking in solvent at the moment.
