I was under my truck today and noticed that the rivets that hold the front cross member in were very loose. Would you recommend welding the cross member in, or put grade 8 bolts in place of the rivets, or both?

Hmmm, replace every rivet with a grade 8 bolt...

might not be such a bad idea, in some places anyway, if thing are already apart.

I had found one loose rivet in my front crossmember a few years ago and i cut the rivet off and replaced it with a grade 8 bolt and it's been fine ever since. Welding would bring on undue stress (assuming you welded every last rivet).

Amen!!!
Grade 8. Don't weld!
Preferably a grade 8 where the shoulder is in the holes, not the threads, as movement can chew through threads quickly, but not through the shoulder.

OK, grade 8 it is, next question. What size are the holes, 3/8" or 7/16"? I'd like to get the bolts before I cut out the rivets.

7/16 fits the best and its tight. might need to drill it a bit to fit. 3/8 drop in but sloppy.

and get metal crimp lock nuts and grd 8 washers not std washers.

to get the smoth shank to fill the hole you might need a bolt thats got extra threads. then cut off extra or run it up threw out of the way instead of down threw . ( pic is the end result of my bolt on )

i went to my local hardware supply store thats nothing but fasteners and he sold me what i needed for my full rear suspension move up on the crew cab build for under 20 bucks. all grd 8 stuff. about 36 bolts/36 nuts/72 washers 1 per side of bolt.

much much cheeper than hardware store price and had the quanity on hand.
