i have a 77 k5 and i replaced the steering box in it while i was home on leave thinking it would take the play out of the steering wheel. well it did but not completly. when i get to aound 40 it gets really loose again, anybody got any ideas on what it could be.

#1 is to make sure the steering box bolts are tight and make sure that there aren't any cracks in the frame.

After that, have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch under the truck. Look for any play in the tie rod ends and draglink ends.

A steering box brace will keep the frame from flexing and will take play out of the steering. Also look into replacing the rag joint style connection at the steering box with a u-joint style shaft. We can help you out with this stuff if you need.

sweet man i will get on that and how much will u-joint style run me?

u joint style shafts are about $70. but that might be only part of the solution. look into borgeson steering components also. my steering is shot and leaking everywhere and has more play than a street walker. im looking into the same. let us know what works...

check out the classified for an XJ. It's not the end all solution, but if you are sure everything is tight, this should help.

never rule out something in the actual steering column too, make sure there is no play in that too.
