I am losing my mind, and emptying my wallet trying to figure out this noise. It is a squeek that is consistant with speed. I think it is in the brakes as it gets louder when I gently push down on the brake and quieter, if not stopping, when I press harder. So far I have completely redone the back drum brakes. New shoes, turned drums. Also the front has relatively new pads and I replaced the right front rotor as it was warped. Also replaced both front calipers and flushed the brake lines. It also seems like the noise gets louder after I have been driving for a while. I am at a loss as to what it is and I don't want to just throw parts at it????:dunno:

So many possibilities.
First, as always, post as much info about your vehicle so we have some idea as to what we are working on.
Or post your full address, and we will send the research team around to your house to collect the info.................:D

Changing with braking, usually indicates part of the wheel assembly, but just to be sure, try it with the truck coasting in neutral. A bad U-Joint will see different loads when you are stopping the truck.

Also, if your emergency brake works, using it will tell whether its in the front or the back.

Odds are, its in the front.
If its 4wd, and the front axles are turning, then it might be a U-Joint in there, or a spindle shaft bushing.
Failing that, wheel bearings, another warped rotor which is moving the caliper back and forth, or those relatively new pads are not as new as you think and the wear piece is chirping.

If your rear brakes were out of adjustment, the front pads will wear fast.

Sorry I forgot to mention that when I replace the front rotor I replaced the front bearings. I checked the front pads and they are nowhere near low enough for the wear indicator to be causing this. The noise is consistent whether the hubs are locked or open, or 2wd or 4wd.

Pretty stock '87 k5 with a 4 in all spring lift and 35x12.50x15 bfg's on 15x12 steel wheels

Thanks for the help:laugh:
