maybe it is the linkedge but the 4wheel shifter has zero resistance, and does not go into 4 wheel drive

I am going to have to agree with Shaggy on this one. At least check and see if the linkage is hooked up... I mean its a simple 5 second check. As soon as we know that little bit, I think we can narrow it down.
But from you "description" /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif of the problem, it does sound alot like the linkage is the issue.
