Lost my only key to my 89 K5. How hard is it to replace my ignition switch and do I need any special tools? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Not a horrible job but you need a steering wheel puller. Should only cost you like $10 though...

Save yourself a ton of grief and get the lock plate compressor as well. Cheap item considering the hell that thing will raise if you try to remove/reinstall the lock plate without it.

Its all pretty straight forward once you get the steering wheel off. There is only one philips head screw holding the ignition cylinder in so it just slides out once the screw is gone.

You might get lucky and run by the dealer with your VIN number and see if they still have the key code for your truck (granted your steering column hasn't been swapped out). This is what I did but unfortunately, my column was swapped out by the PO. I was able to get the code for the door lock so not all was lost.

Worth a shot before diving into a project......

I think the lock cylinder with keys is like $8 at a parts store. They probably also have the puller and compressor tools in the loaner program.

Have you tried any other chevy keys? Mine will start with just about any older/worn chevy key you got, granted it is a 87, but the tumblers in a 89 could be just as worn out. Worth a shot :dunno:

I paid $13 for mine at O'rilleys a week or so ago. They have an all in one loaner kit that has the puller and plate compressor in one box too.
