So this last weekend my 72 K5 managed to break off and loose 2 rear studs w/lug nuts. A third one needed to be tightened 3 times. I am going to replace the wheel studs, but was curiour if they can be replaced with out pulling the axle? Any idea what size the studs are? thanks a ton...

Not sure about size (just ask at the parts store) but yes they can be replaced without pulling the axle. Just pop the drum off and use one of these: clicky to install the new ones with a lugnut until the shoulder is seated on the back of the axle flange. With that happening I would replace all 6 studs on that side, don't need any more problems. Then just make sure to torque them down evenly. Most trucks call for @ 100ft/lbs. :thumb:

If you still have the smaller 7/16" studs, you can upgrade to the thicker 1/2" studs.
I did that on my K5 with 35" tires and a big diesel. the studs actually fit in the same hole, no drilling was necessary either.
Problem is you will need to do that to all 4 tires, I had one axle already done like that so it made sense to switch over the second axle.:D

Wait a minute. What 1/2" studs did you use on the front end that didn't require drilling?

I had a set in an axle that was already upgraded I took it to Kragen, and I talked to the guy showed it to him, he looked it up in the computer and he found the exact same one.
The 7/16" stud has a big base but is necked down, the 1/2" stud is not necked down.:dunno:
That was 8 years ago.
