Lots of things wrong, I need confirmation (56K beware - PICS!)

Do you need tall valvecovers or will a set of stockers work for you?

I really don't know what I have.... This is the damage:

And here's a (sorta) pic of the good side:

Can anyone tell what kinda valve covers I have? How do I know what I need? And, what are the odds that I have valvetrain damage??

Only way to tell if you have valvetrain damage there is to pop that damaged valve cover off. If you are just running stock rockers, any valvecover will work, if you have roller's with polylocks you'll need to run taller valvecovers.
If you damaged a stock style rocker, I've got some I'll send you. :D

I won't get to take them off for another week or so, but they don't appear to be tall.... So I'll be needing those, I guess. I won't know what else until I get a chance to go through the rest of it, too.

Another way to check the rear axle. Tie a string off to one wheel, pass it thru and under the brake drum. Pull the string across, under the brake drum and thru the other wheel. Tie the loose end of the string off. Make sure the string is at the bottom of each brake drum. Measure up from the string to the bottom of the axle tube, taking measurements at the drum end and the diff ends, both sides. Compare side to side measurements, should be the same, or very close to it. I don't know what the manu tolerances were new, but I would think anything more than 1/16 inch indicates a problem. On the front, use a small (torpedo) level on the sides of the frame to check for twisting. I read your post bout the runaway. Its enough to make ya cry.

14b is bent.... I used a laser level (Rene's suggestion) and sure enough, it ain't straight. I'll find another 14b, put my 4.56 and Detroit from this one into that one, keep the shafts as spares, and decide what I'm going to do with what's left over.

ill ship ya a big hammer, bang it out close and hit the trails again. ever seen rick pewe's GPW (i know its not a k5 but k5s are tougher anyway) it wheeled like crazy with bent frame ext for years and years. sorry bout the luck but dont let it get ya down. just realize now its definatly a trail only rig

balzer

Balzer, it's trail only, anyway. I don't want to run a bent axle, and it shouldn't be too hard to get another 14b set up.
