Sorry if you’re seeing this twice I posted it in my build thread but it’s kind of a big deal to me and I wanted to get more eyes on it. I fired the k5 up the other night and it was running rougher than normal and I had a lot of white smoke billowing out of the passenger side exhaust. It obviously has me a little concerned right now and since this is my first motor I’m now second guessing everything I did on it. Last time I fired it up before this it was running really well I was actually really happy with it. The white smoke concerns me because my first thought is coolant in the cylinders but I’ve been going through my head and I’m not sure how that would be possible. I’m going to check the oil tomorrow and pull all the plugs and crank it with some paper in front of the plug holes and see if there’s anything in the cylinders. Any and all advice and opinions would me much appreciated. Thanks guys.

The build thread

White smoke is often antifreeze, sometimes oil. If your sniffer works, you can smell the glycol

Oil would likely be a ring if its doing it as soon as you start

Antifreeze could be intake, but more likely head gasket (presumably no cracks or pinholes in the heads or block)
Sometimes you can pull a plug and see a green hint of color on the porcelain
Sometimes you can open the radiator cap and see bubbles moving in there

Hope this helps

It does thank you. It’s hard to pin down the smell it definitely doesn’t smell like burning oil. It’s tough because the exhaust is brand new and there’s paint still burning off on them and the exhaust wrap hasn’t gotten that hot yet so I can smell it every time It warms up so there’s a lot of smells going on. Most concerning thing for me is it’s just out of one side making me think it is coolant. I’ll try to find out today.

Does the smoke clear out after it warms up? Don’t overlook the possibility of condensation on first start up.

Because it was running rougher I didn’t let it warm up much i didn’t know what was wrong and didn’t want to damage anything. It’s possible that is the case. That’s probably best case scenario right now.

pull the spark plugs on that side . burning lots of water = clean plug tip . and you will notice the difference compared to the others.

Longer post on my build thread but basically I pulled all the plugs and cranked it. Nothing on the plugs and nothing came out of the cylinders. Fired it up and it ran perfect with no smoke at all. It’s possible I had the #2 cylinder plug wire popped off at the distributor because I was able to push it down a tiny bit. Not totally sure but there doesn’t seem to be any problem. Thanks for all the input I really appreciate it more than you guys know.
