a cracked flywheel could definately make a sound in reverse, but not drive. and could 'ching' when you stop and the momentum put on it suddenly changes. pop off the inspection cover, or the starter and have someone slowly crank the motor over with the crank pulley bolt. watch for cracks in the flywheel, especially towards it's center. you might have to use a mirror to be able to see the center of it.
another shop told one of our customers that the motor i'd just installed in their car was blown because it was making lots of noise. but when i put it in reverse it went away. in park it was awfully loud and in drive it was there but much more quiet. i then noticed the noise was loudest by the bell housing. i popped off the flywheel cover and it was all but shattered. much cheaper easier fix than another motor
