well, im getting kinda stumped on this one. Got an 89 k5 with 350 tbi and 700r4. The last couple weeks ive been noticing a ticking coming from the truck. It only does it when its in drive and i step on the gas. I pulled the dust cover and checkd the flexplate and no cracks. I tightened up the torque converter bolts and still hear it. it doesnt do it in park/nuetral while idling or reving it up, only in D when i hit the gas. It sounds bad, and speeds up as more load is put on....could it be as simple as an exhaust leak? what else possibly? :dunno:

I was leaning toward an exhaust leak. hard to diag not being with the vehicle. Exhaus leaks are usually worse when cold on start up. sometimes get better when warm. hope you find your issue.

I'm sure you have already read this thread.

It started out about like yours, but eventually went downhill. Long read, but he did eventually find the noise......

The main reason I recommend reading it, is because pretty much all options for checking for noise was covered.
Might give you some ideas.

lord help me if i have an internal engine issue. cant afford that.
i was hoping it might be an exhaust leak, but like i said, it only does it when im driving down the road and am accelerating. The sound is exactly like a lifter.:dunno: but i dont think thats the problem

take a close look at the exhaust manifolds,my 1990 blazer developed a crack in one and had a loud ticking under load, drove me nuts till i found it,you have to pull the heat shields off to inspect them, the ticking noise did not sound like a exhaust leak, thats why it took me forever to find it

It is common for a manifold to crack on a 350 tbi motor.

Just an update, I def. think its the exhaust on driverside..I think im gonna throw a set of ceramic headers and some copper gaskets on, then forget about it...hopefully it will sound much better soon

it was the drivers side on mine that cracked as well

I had a passenger side manifold crack in the middle of it on a car several years ago.

That link you were directed to was mine, that particular sound wasn't really a tick, you could definitely tell it was a scraping sound, just didn't pick up through the camera on the phone too well.

When the manifold cracked in the car I had, it would tick real loud for a few minutes, and real loud under acceleration, but would eventually pretty much go away after it got good and hot.

I have headers on my other Burb, I know everybody loves them, they are supposed to help with horsepower, but honestly, I prefer the stock manifolds after having to deal with various issues with headers, this wasn't the first vehicle I have had them on either. Maybe I'm just getting old, starting to like the simpler things, I dunno. :D
