Good morning my fellow K5ers. I have recently begun to hear a loud whine coming from the rear of my '89. It is speed dependent and is most noticeable while decelerating, especially when it downshifts to first or while lightly pressing the gas and cruising in first. That however, may just be because the loud exhaust, knobby tires, and my deafness. You guys figure my 10 bolt is getting ready to blow up on me?

I seem to remember a few suburbans and other vehicles from at least the early 90s coming through the dealership I worked at years ago with a loud noise coming from the 10 bolt. They replaced them but I think that they said the noise was harmless but obviously bothered people.

I'm going to pull the cover off today but wanted to know what I may be in store for. I had a 14bff to put in there but had to sell it when I had to move across the country. So am I going to have a bad day ya think? Thanks for the input all.

I've heard intermittent whining from the back of the vehicle ever since I started having kids. The nice thing about your problem is that once you fix it, the noise will be gone for good.

Thanks for replying. So first I meant while cruising in OD above. So do you know if the noise is from damage? I really am broke right now and can't afford to fix it but it is my DD so I can't afford to be w/o it either. Is an '89 K5 one of the rash of early 90s trucks that can just have a noisy rear end? Or is it more likely to be from physical damage to the ring gear or pinion or something else in there? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I hope it isnt a bad bearing, if I remember correctly those are hard to get to?....Any other thoughts folks? Or does a bearing sound most likely?
