low oil pressure

1988 Chevy S-10 Blazer, 4WD, approx 150,000 miles, 2.8 liter

Now experiencing low oil pressure, check guage lite on, check engine lite on. When cold, good pressure, when heats up, goes low. Possible smell of gas in the oil, maybe not.

What to look for? Lower bearing? Oil pump (pain to replace)

I had low oil pressure for about 2 years on my chevy. I stressed about it and put on a hi-po oil pump and used thicker oil and anything else I could think of.
Turned out my oil pressure guage line (I have a mech. guage) was leaking. I replaced it and bingo, oil pressure was over pegged all the way to the right. Step number one - drain the 50w and put in 10w30.
It did a similar thing, would read nomral when cold but low when warm. I know on your 88 you have a oil sending unit, but I'm just telling you what happened to me.

Well with 150,000 on the board, chances are you rings are worn out. Fuel is blowing and going into your crankcase and probably making that gas smell. Run a compression check and let us know.

I've got a 400sb in my 76. I had it rebuilt and I still have low oil pressure when hot at idle sitting in traffic. It picks right up as soon as I accelerate. It read the same way before it was rebuilt.
