Lower ball joint question

I am in the middle of replacing my balljoints (88-k5), does anyone know what size the nut is on the lower balljoint? It is smaller than the top nut, and of course I dont have the correct size wrench but can get one from work tomorrow. Also,I can get the knuckle off with the axleshaft still in right? It looks pretty close to the u-joint. Any help would be appreciated!
