Im thinking about buying a lomax 205 kit with my tax return. Im going to need to drive this thing too and from untill I hit the lotto and can afford a diesel.
Does anyone know if the high range is affected by the lower gears?
How about a formula so i can figure out my crawl ratio with 4:56's?
Id like to add a doubler next year.
Thanks

High range is still the same. Ratio calculation is easy multiplication.

trans ratio x tcase ratio x diff ratio = crawl ratio

I dont know, i've been thinking about it. Im just thinkin about drive shaft costs. I dont think 34:1 is going to be low enough.

Thats not the worse. Personally I think crawl ratio is stupiud....get out in the real world and see what works. Plus if you have an auto? then crawl ration is not as important.

What are your specs? Gears, tire size, motor, trans? Terrain?

I had like 36:1 with 37's & a torque 350. I had no problems crawling with that setup. I had a 1000 RPM stall converter in the 700R4 and if I was doing 1200rpm I was either spinning all 4 tire or climbing whatever I was on.

I now have 29:1 with the same tires & motor. I now have a TH400 with a 1400rpm stall and still have no problems crawling. If I had 42's it would probably suck but with my 37's it is just fine.

I just aquired this truck in sept. It has a 400hp sb400 tpi, th 350 stall converter uknown, np205. I just installed a set of 1 tons (4:56)from a military truck. 14ff detroit and a d6o that just recieved an arb. 37" mtr's I plan on running a 40" tire as soon as these wear out.
I like low gears, with the trails I plan on runnin control is crutial. I just dont want to have to buy driveshafts just yet if at all possible.

With a motor with that much torque you should be fine for crawling. The only place you will suffer from not having super low gearing is downhill decents where you want engine braking. You will have decent EB but you won't have it like the dudes with the doublers & low axle gears do.

I personally would do the Lomax first. See if you like it, and then decide if you need/want the doubler still. You won't be stopped by only having 35:1 crawl especially with your motor. I have never been stopped by lack of gearing yet because the TPI has so much lowend. When I had the 700/208 setup and was 36:1 I actually almost wished I had LESS gearing. The TPI has so much throttle response it made crawling very interesting because just a slight blip of the throttle yielded alot of power. My first few trips out with the TPI my truck did alot of surging as I got used to controlling the throttle. Part of this was due to my 1000rpm stall converter though too.

Wheeling my truck is a 2 footed affair. Most of the time I get on the brake hard, crack the throttle open just a hair and then start to let off the brakes.

I am now at 29:1 and it is hasn't stopped me yet either. I now have 37" street compound Maxxis Creepy Crawlers. This is one step from a true Comp tire and even with these tires at 8psi I have no problems crawling.
