Dad is dropping a LQ4 in his 1979 GMC. SM 465 NP 205 14 FF rear stock dana in front. 2.5" spring lift running 33 12.5 15 with 4:11 gears. Using Trans-Dapt engine mounts (1" set-back) with custom made +1" lower mounts. 2006 4.8 flywheel with 12" clutch and pressure plate for the 465. It will be duel electric fan cooled (2002 caddy donor), stand alone with about a 350 HP tune.
Only problem we are having is header choice. We hear the late model F body headers fit with a little frame trimming, and don't want to trim the frame. Can not drop a whole lot (no more then $300-$400), on the headers as it would bust the budget.
Think about everything else is accounted for. Except for body and interior that is. Thinking it will never be super pretty, gonna work a lil' bit.
It will haul wood, pull me out if I screw up, and haul a55 for dad. Any suggestions welcome, and thanks for looking.

Personally, it would just save the money and run manifolds. If you can get 400+factory hp out of these stock manifolds, I think they will be fine for a woods truck. :waytogo:

Call them and ask if they will work with a lifted straight axle. Id be willing to bet the 4wd incompatibility is an IFS thing.

Probably. Usually any 4WD incompatibility on a straight axle results in the header collector contacting either the rear shackle or the front drive shaft. Those look to be slip-fit collectors, which buys some space.

Theres a truck in my town with a 6.0 and a granny 4 speed with mechanical linkage, but its a 69. Should be the same ballpark, just need a z ball mount.

thanks guys :waytogo: i might start a build thread on it.. dad and i are treading into uncharted waters here so it will be quite a learning experience

i am putting an LQ4 into my '80 k5... the frames are identical.
i used street and performance headers... they are a bit above your budget ($650) but they fit with NO mods what so ever.

here's a pic.

they also come with 02 bungs.

but for a woods truck, manifolds would be the cheap and non flashy way to go, for sure.
i've also heard f-body manifolds are the best manifolds to use. (least frame mods)

that looks sharp in there! any other issues you had or was it pretty a pretty sooth install?

headers fit like a glove.
only issue with fitment i have had so far were my engine mounts.... my solution ended up being brand new engine angle mounts from TNA, lower competition mounts from ORD, LS adapter plates from DIY4x, and I had to weld my ORD mounts to the TNA angle brackets.
check out my thread, its got some info in it.

So changed direction, found a set of SS F-body manifolds. Already ordered the egr block off kit. Only problem is only one has an O2 bung, so have to weld in the other. Went witha Trans-Dapt mount kit. Measures near perfect, will test fit soon, that is after Dad ends his OCD obsession with making the motor look good.... Told him to not start painting it. Now he's tore it all the way down, stripped and painted everything. Would be back together, but then he started on the intake. Smoothed it out and applying fiberglass.
After all those hours in the motor, don't know i9f I want to see how he treats the rest of the truck. At this rate it will take years. I'll try to get some pics on soon.

Good luck! BTW, with those manifolds, the other side o2 mounts in the down tube off the manifold.

Yeah, figured that out. When we did there was some cussing, then more beer, and then a new plan. Not a huge problem, just pita. Distance really shouldn't make a difference, so planning on putting it in an easy spot. Also http://wait4meperformance.com/ built one hell of a nice looking harness, as well as providing a computer and the tune for a great price, and what Dad says was great service. So far, 2000 6.0L LQ4, SS F-body manifolds, tune by wait4meperformance, port matched truck intake, SM 265, NP 205. Tuff Country 2.5 inch HD ordered. The truck is rough though, not bad for the age, just old.

Thanks for just hearing me out. Gonna get dad to sign up.
