LS cams and computers

That is true for the whole swap, yes there are additional costs, but just for the engine mods he was asking about the cost isn’t too bad. Guess I assumed he had already decided on the swap.

I already own the engine for the swap so yeah I'm committed to it. Mine is a dealer pull out for a really stupid reason with 20k miles on it. So they removed all the external accessories to put back on the truck. I got it so cheap I don't really think it's fair but it did leave me searching for those parts that is should have came with.

In that case your harness will probably be the most expensive part. ($700-$$$) Tons of companies out there that will build one specifically for your vehicle. Painless, Tilden motorsports, I think Team208 will, and some others.

Seen a lot of people going with Shoenfeld headers. $250 or ~ $600 for ceramic coated.

With only 20k do you really want or need to swap a cam? I totally understand wanting extra power but you practically have a brand new motor.

Edit: I have a 90mm DBW throttle body and stock manifolds if you’re interested. It’ll cut some cost off the initial swap and you can change stuff later.

Think about heading to a pick and pull for the ECM, intake and harness as well as TAC module and gas pedal. That stuff is pretty cheap here vs. having to source it at retail prices elsewhere. As for intakes, someone else already mentioned it but the truck intake's only flaw is ugliness. It outflows pretty much everything else out there except for the Holley Hi-ram. There are guys that shave some of the ugly off and use a bit of filler to re-shape and smooth the truck intake and make it look cooler. Again, if that matters to you it's an option.

I’ll add this...

If you don’t want to go DBW here is a good priced DBC throttle bodie. I plan to use it since I’m going DBC. This keeps you from having to get the pedal assembly.

For the looks of the intake, yeah they suck. But a nice stock cover can help that and give you a stock appearance.

Getting a junkyard ECM and harness is definitely a cost efficient option and doing the mods to it aren’t very difficult.

You can pretty much go as cheap or as expensive as you want.

Guys not all intakes are created equal. I'm not talking about performance either. You need to look at which generation of engine or more specifically the heads to know what intake you can run. The Gen III and Gen IV intakes don't interchange. The port shape changed from the skinny cathedral port to a larger/wider rectangular port. So an LQ4 isn't going to work with a TBSS intake.

The point is really you shouldn't have to change the intake unless you are trying to squeeze every drop of power from the unit. Use what you got.

Here's a good guide of the generations, with all the pitfalls of swapping between car and truck intakes within the generations.

Good point. Didn’t think to ask what heads he has. However, my TBSS is a cathedral port as are the 317 heads on the Lq4.

He doesn’t have an intake at all.

Speaking of, I have the stock LQ4 intake sitting around as well :D.

TBSS is a cathedral port head along with the GenIV 4.8L and 5.3L. The GenIV engines that got the rectangular port heads are the larger displacement 6.0L and 6.2L.

Yes, he tbss intake is a direct swap and for those with a cable they make a throttle body that will bolt right on.

It also makes torque around the same as a truck intake. Has the flow of a car but the torque of a truck sense the LS2 was in a suv.

I had it in my head that LS2's had the rectangular ports. Thanks for the correction.

Mine has the tall skinny cathedral ports. I was going to replace the cam more for funzies, while I have it out. The engine was pulled with 20k because of a ticking lifter. As stupid as that sounds, I actually verified it with the dealer. Old couple had the engine in their suburban, kept going back in with an engine noise. Service manager told them it was nothing, just a lifter that had a small tick. Old couple threw a hissy fit and contacted GM. They were given the option to pull the engine down to replace the lifters or replace the engine....guess which one they chose. It was wrapped and stored in their warehouse until I bought it. It was pulled last year....LOL

If you guys have parts that I need then by all means PM me. I'm doing a swap to a sm465 to I will need a flywheel as well. I WISH that we had a pic a part locally. I'm not even aware of one in the state. That would be my first stop if we did as all the stuff I need is just stock crap.

We don't have any pull a part type places here that I am aware of. If someone wanted to pull some parts for me at one of these places I would certainly compensate then for the time.

DBW isn't much more work honestly. 6 or so more wires. But either way works as good as the other.

Guys I need the part number for the correct flywheel to use in mating this to the sm465. Flywheel and pilot bearing I think are from an LS7? Anyway, I'm going to go ahead and pull my 350 this week likely and get the 5.3 sitting in her new home. All I need to do that is the new flywheel, pilot bearing and a new clutch which I can source locally. I got a hook up here for the motor mounts as well. Then we'll talk radiators! I want all that cool electric fan goodness....

Oh and one other thing....do I need to run a cat (cat's) on this? I really don't want to but hey...

No Cats unless you want to or if required by your state.

If your radiator is in decent shape and is at least a 3 row core then no need to change it out. The radiator hoses from the donor truck should be pretty close. Worst case you'd have to splice one.

Electric fans: you can go aftermarket for a considerable amount of money with ease of installation or get a set of used Windstar fans for a fraction of the price. Set them up on a relay so that the ECM triggers the ground.
