Lug nut thread depth?

I've seen a few posts lately that mention they have longer wheel studs for aluminum wheels. I just got finished mounting my 8 lug aluminum wheels and got to wondering what is the appropriate amount of thread needed to mount the lug nuts. I can srew the lug nuts on about 12 turns or about 5/8 of an inch. Is that adequate? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

most people buy longer studs when they convert their rear drums to discs.

you have more around 3/4" of contact, since the studs are 9/16-16 thread.

personally dually wheel studs would be way too long for you, and you are close to being short right now. a standard GM style lugnuts is slightly larger thatn 3/4", i alwasy thought it was a good idea to have threads extand out past the lug nut. but i dont think you will have any major problems as long as you have all 8 lugs per wheel.

A standard rule of thumb is as much thread length as diameter. In other words if you have a 1/2" bolt your nut should also be 1/2" deep or thick. Just a rule of thumb.

And for anything critical try for 1-1/2 times the diameter.

I thought they were 9/16 - 18 ... but if it is 16 tpi then all the better. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I don't think that's going to happen. I have the Gorilla deep end lug nuts. I think they're about 2 inches long. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

So it sounds like for now I can get away with it but the next time I do my bearings I should have studs replaced.

they may be 9/6-18, 9/16-16 sounded right at the time
