While surfing through Jegs I found a Lunati Voodoo camshaft that I believe should fit my engine pretty well. I have a 305 HO from an 83 Firebird all stock except for a Pertronix Flame Thrower distributor, Weiand Action+ intake, 2" carb spacer, and a Holley 4160 carb.

The rpm range is 1000rpm-5500rpm which is right where I like to opporate. Would this be a good camshaft selection for my engine? Also If I were to put this into my high milage 305, would it ruin the engine?

Dont have any personal experience with them but I have heard they are a good cam.
Susposed to work good on Carbed or computer FI. I have been concidering getting one for my TBI K5. I like the numbers.
It looks like is a very good torque cam.
If your engine is in good shape I dont think it will hurt. It has more lift than the stock HO cam. Maby get a new set of valve springs if yours are orginal.

Well my engine burns a little oil but thats about it. As far as I know the valve springs are original. You don't have to take the heads off in order to replace the valve springs right?

it was a tossup for me on that name cam or comp cams.. I went with comp cams extreme 4x4 cam

they too recommend replacing the springs to which I did not do...

1991 caprice police 350 2bot (L05 block) hydro roller
comp cams extreme 4x4 cam (.454" lift) roller
1996 hoe vortec heads
dual plane vortec intake
holley truck avenger 670cfm...

sooo nice....

I wonder what would have happened if I went with a voodoo cam....

here is mine..

To replace the springs with the heads on you need an air compressor and the fitting that screws in the spark plug hole. You need air pressure in the cylinder to hold the valves in. So they dont fall into the cylinder.

Glenn - try giving the lunati tech line a jingle - I'd change the springs, but my concern would be if the old heads flowed enough air to take advantage of the new cam profile..everything works as a system, and changing just one thing can sometimes lead to disappointment.

True thats why I wanted to consult you guys to make sure that if what i get I will be happy with.

Oh and Tom, BTW I have noticed a lot less oil consumption in my engine along with a greatly reduced "puff" at startup. :waytogo:

I was going to mention it, but looks like someone else already did...the "HO" 305's were fairly hot engines as they came from the factory. Pretty small valves, I'd be hesitant to think that a mild cam would do much better. Might want to check the later HO 305 motors in the Monte SS's, see if the cam was bigger later on.

I can't recall, but do you have headers? Low end torque sees a big boost from them, and the 305 can't help but need the help if you haven't already. :)

No I don't have headers, but I will look into the cam profiles over the years for the HOs. I definately know that the power increased nearly every year on them.

I plan on doing headers when I do the entire exhaust system.

But in a slightly different direction, how do you think this cam would do in a basic Goodwrench 350 crate engine? The valves are bigger, however the compression is lower.

Sorry, I didn't look at the cam specs. Just by looking at them I can't tell a whole lot, didn't get into all the numbers that much.

Headers on a 350 add a BUNCH of low end torque (test I've read showed 40+ ft lbs, which is huge IMO) A 305 is not likely to show that much in gain, but it's got to be pretty decent. I suspect anything near 40 ft lbs would be greater than what you'd get out of a cam with the operating range most of us want ina truck.
