What do the springs do? I have been searching, but all I can figure is they keep the pins in place, but it seems like they should have more of a purpose.

Also, will any spring and pin kit work in any locker? I have a detroit ez locker, and can't find a kit for it.
was wondering if a lockrite kit would work.

The springs make the locker "lock", without them it would ratchet all the time.

I would find the springs for your exact locker, if the spring sizes or rates are different your locker won't work correctly. It is pretty likely that they use the same or similar springs but IMO its not worth trail and error.

The springs make it UNLOCK. This is why you can jack one tire off the ground and spin that tire by hand without having the other tire spin (the locker will just be ratcheting).

The torque input from the pinion is what makes it lock (this force overcomes the spring pressure). They only need to be big enough to let the side gears and couplers disengage when the torque is realized, thus the reason they are small.
