Veering back to previous discussions of jump starting- I was thinking about this recently, which, you know, is a dangerous thing...
When my starter relay crapped out (the one that goes 12v from the key switch to the 24v to the starter), I wound up jump starting it with a little wire and a safety pin through the wire to send power to the starter, bypassing the relay. Turns out it was 12v that we were sending, and the truck still started (cold start on a hot day in July) with a little bit of cranking, but no glow plugs. The starter was turning slow, but it was turning, enough to start the truck.
If it was cold (like winter) this would be a little bit trickier, but I think it could still be done with a regular 12v jump start. Far from ideal, but it could be done.
