Today's question is on front clips. My 1986 M1009 has, on each side of the grille, one large headlight above a rectangular blinker.

My 1983 K10, in the same location, has 2 headlights, with blinker inserted into the grille
(Hole above blinker is unique to my truck and was apparently added to accommodate block heater cord :doah:).

My question is this: What years/styles featured the front clip setup of my M1009? I see it on M1008/M1009 trucks, and I thought I had seen it on civilian vehicles, but I am not able to pinpoint any examples of such.

A readthrough of http://brochures.slosh.com/ leads to no matches, but I'm not sure how many trim possibilities are represented. The square headlight seems to match the styling from the 1980 brochure, but the grille and trim match the '86 (as I'd expect). Were there different headlight styles for different levels of trim?

the 2 styles are easy to play with . 81-91 same front end setup .

if you want 4 headlight just swap the core support and keep the grill from the m-series .

the core support if the difference only . and the headlight bezels . the turn signals went in to the grill tabs with specific turn signal bodys . but with led stuff now easy to get around and keep m-series grill .

this is how guys swap the 89-91 front clips in place on the 81-87 style fronts like you have .

I know the 1 extra plug should be for 24 volt jump starting . the second I am not sure .

the 2 headlight model was just the basic bare bones model . the 4 headlight was the fancy setup .

On my 87 I had this on the drivers side of core support it is a knock out. and same as the one on rh side for the air tube.

As said the grill has tabs in it for the turn signals

Not sure if this will help. But as stated to go to the four head lamps you HAVE to change core support.

Thanks for responding. I think one of my original questions was answered ("Were there different headlight styles for different levels of trim?"). It sounds like single headlights were standard and dual headlights were an option from 81-87. That would explain why I see both styles commonly.

However, in typical CK5 fashion, my original question has become inspiration for yet another potential project. :haha:
I hadn't been thinking of converting the headlights (although I do enjoy the dual headlights on the '83). But now the wheels are turning...

Why do I have to change the core support to change the headlights? And what are the knock-outs used for?

And for sweetk30, the extra plug on the passenger side of the grille is indeed the 24V jumper connector. The round object protruding from the driver side of the grille is a small blackout light. Shielded by its hood, its light is not visible from above or alongside. Unfortunately, its light is also not visible from the driver's seat. Unless you are standing in front of the hood (and looking downward) it's pretty much useless. At least, I haven't figured out a good use for it. :dunno:

different stamping patterns for the headlight and turn signal area on a 2 to a 4 headlight core support . this is why it needs swapped out .

and as for the knock out its for air inlet tube to the air filter . the left side one I have no idea what its for unless right hand drive models over sea's . :dunno:
