Hi Guys,

I will be traveling in the near future to bring an M1009 home. I'm building a tow bar and need to varify the dimensions of the 2 front box tubes that bolt to the frame, and extend through the bumper...where the shackles mount.

The plan is to remove the shackles and flat tow the vehicle (remove drive shafts of course).

What is the dimension, "inside to inside" of the box tubes?, and what is the dimension, "outside to outside"? I really need these measurements to fab the tow bar....duh. Shackle hole info would be helpful as well.

Also, do the shackle pins un-screw, or do they have to be cut off to remove the shackles?...tried to determine this one from pics, but they are odd looking shackle pins.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You don't have to pull shafts, just put the transfer case in neutral. the dimentions I have no idea.

The pins come off, they are held on by a cotter pin.

I would pull the rear shaft and just unlock the hubs, some cases will be fine just in neutral others can have some lubrication issues

Thanks guys for your inputs. 1 member off the SS board gave me some dimensions, but before I fabricate the bar and go cross country with the intent of retrieving my prize...I want to hear the same numbers from more than 1 guy!

It's not that I don't trust him, it's just a precaution. If I can find 1 more guy that can put a tape measure on his, I'll feel much better!

Thanks,

I got ~31" inches outside to outside and 27 3/4" inside to inside.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for? Or do you want the measurements of the tubes themselves?

If you're looking for the actual tube size, you don't need it. Just use a couple of these:
harbor freight item #97095 (I'd link it, but I don't have enough posts yet)

They slip right over them, you just need to drill a 1" hole for the pins.

THANKS WITH 1 MINUTE TO SPARE

I had already provided the fab shop (where I work) with a drawing and they were about 1 minute from adding the attachemnt points onto the tow bar when I walked into the shop with a change. The numbers you gave me are .500 less than the first set of dimensions I had, on the inside...so, I opted to go with a wider attachment point "just to be sure" that when I pull up to my prize I KNOW IT WILL FIT.

Once I have the tow bar finished I'll post some pictures and the shop drawing for the next guy in need.

Thanks again ,

Good.. You want to have a little leeway. Just in case one of the points is bent or something. Make sure you bring a sledge hammer with you in case you need to "finesse" anything.. =)
