I've always dreamed about owning a M1009 and making it a off road vehicle, alittle piece of good old US Military hardware. If I bought one does anybody know how practical converting it over to weggie oil is? And how do these 6.2L Diesels run off road? Any info would be helpful thanks.
 
It's not hard to convert for WVO. The 6.2L is a great offroad engine. Just idles over obstacles with your foot off of the pedal. Since the motor is governed, it automatically keeps the RPM's where they should be at idle.

i bought mine from www.govliquidation.com which is where they come from when uncle sam gets rid of them. i paid $1700 for it and had to buy a glow plug card for $154 from the dealership. never done anything else to it and it starts every time. check carefully and even call the site managers and see which one runs before you bid on it. preferably go look at it in person before you buy. i have bought all kinds of stuff from them since then and the best advice i can give is go look at it first, then buy... oh, and you have to figure out how to get it cuz they dont transport, if you are serious about it, ill get a key made from mine and send it to you. for some reason they always lose the keys, but they're all keyed the same so one key will work in all of them.

IMO SVO/WVO is the worst thing you can do to a diesel engine designed to run on #2 diesel. Neither the injection hardware nor the engine itself is designed for a fuel that viscous (even heated it is still much thicker than #2) . On top of that, the veggie oil molecule contains components called glycerides which won't burn completely in most engines (and end up in the oil via blowby), leading to gumming, coking, and eventual failure. There are plenty of other sad stories like that one. There are people who say our older IDI's will tolerate WVO/SVO. Well, they will run longer than the newer engines, but they will still eventually succumb. Just because Rudolf ran his on peanut oil doesn't automatically mean veggie oils are acceptable for all diesels. IIRC, Diesel's engine used air blast injection. Large marine "cathedral" diesels also use air blast injection to help atomize the heavy "bunker fuel" oil that they run on. That's why these engines can run on fuels that would destroy any engine designed for #2.

Anyway, I just figured I would pass on the warning. It's your engine, and your choice. I just figured I would point out that the "savings" of veggie oil don't pan out in the long run.

you are correct that not all active units are keyed the same, however when they are demilitarized, they are re-keyed to the original "master" key since the doors are still the same. i imagine a couple have slipped through the cracks over the years, but for the sake of arguement, they're all keyed the same when they leave (or at least are supposed to be, it's part of the demilitarization process that gets checked when they leave uncle sam) some of these are sent to private government use and are required to be the same key as part of that procurement. seems kinda wasteful, but thats the way the government code states they are to be released.
 
Trust me, it isn't done that way. There's more than enough folks over on www.SteelSoldiers.com having issues with the one size fits all "CUCV key" not working with their new purchases to show it isn't that way.

Frankly you're lucky if the government and GL do the paperwork correctly as you try to pay them...forget about them handling the truck right and following procedures. One guy fairly recently bought one that was listed as not running. New set of glow plugs and it runs and drives fine. They didn't want to spend the money or effort on it.
