I'm new to the K5 commuunity but not to big trucks or diesels when I heard there were diesel K5s I had to have one and that I could get a military version I knew I wanted one. So to keep me from rambling first what is the diffrence between the civilan K5 and military and how would I go about registering this truck. Thanks
 
m1009...hybrid 12/24 volt electrical system. 10 bolts front and rear, 3.08's, 6.2 'J' code, TH400 NP 208 T-case.

Civi diesel K5...standard 12 volt system, "C" code 6.2, 700R-4 tranny, 10 bolts front and rear, NP208 or NP 241 T-case depending on year, Gears generally 3.08-3.73 depending on how the truck was spec'd when new.

So does it have to stay the hybrid or can it be converted to 12v all around
 
It can be converted and a lot of guys do just that. It's really only the starting system that is 24 volt. I think there is more info on the conversion process in the diesel forum. You might try poking around in there.

The civilian models have more creature comforts too. They could be had with A/C, stereos, carpets, interior panels, etc. The M1009's were very stripped down, bare bones, which can be better depending on your needs.
The glow plugs were also 24V. I suppose that's kind of part of the starting system, but I just wanted to clarify.
 
I just found out new stuff recently about the military ones.
They do say they are 3/4 ton just as they call the K30 5/4 ton.
Well the M1009 have stiffer springs and have extra clamps on the leafs, to make them cary more. The fronts are 3 leaf versus 2 for 1/2 ton blazers.
Also the diesel 6.2 in them is a J code, no emissions stuff, so just like a K30 diesel.
 
Just an FYI, my civi K5 with smallblock came with a 3 leaf front pack, and military wrap second leaf...still a half ton.

Yeah, I know...just saying the 3 leaf front isn't specific to the M1009's is all. Frankly i'd have no problems carrying 750 lbs in a K5, so 3/4 ton it is I guess. Payload anyways.

By the way the leaf count isn't the only thing different, the spring pack has 4 clamps versus 2 clamps on the civvy trucks.
That was the first time I see that. I have a set in my yard now from a M1009.:D
 
The suspension and parts in the M1009 are all stock standard GM stuff. None of it was special, GM and DOD wanted it that way. Order a diesel K5 with the towing package, snow plow setup, HD everything and you'd get the same springs. My diesel K5 has the same packs.
Aside from the 24v/12v thing - that was special but all GM parts stuff cobbled together.
Very little on the CUCV's was proprietary.

DOD rates them by actual capacity, not marketing terms. This has caused lots of confusion over the years.

750lbs would be 3/8 of a ton, as a ton is 2000lbs

On a side note, my civi diesel has 3 leafs in it, so as you said, it's definitely not m1009 specific.

The only real unique thing about the military CUCV Blazer is that it came with a TH400 transmission and the hybrid 24/12 volt electrical system. Otherwise it is just a stripped own civvy version. Personally I think the TH700R4 and lower axle gears makes for a much better combination (I have a '90 that came with the 700 and 3.73).

Regarding the whole 3/4 ton Blazer and 5/4 ton truck.......find me a factory or dealer document from this era that actually states "1/2 ton", "3/4 ton", etc... Maybe they exist but everything I have seen states something like K10, C20, etc... All of that is just old school slang terms that people still use to distinguish different levels of trucks but it's not accurate. My 2500HD that everybody calls a "3/4 ton" has a GVW of 9,200 lbs. but only ways about 6,500 lbs. empty so techically it should be well over a 1 ton. New "1/2 tons" have a payload over 3/4 tons, etc... So nothing special about the payload capacity of the CUCV trucks, just that the military rated them for what they actually could carry vs. using some old slang terms.

Its especially variable when dealing with military vehicles. A "1 1/4 ton" Humvee includes vehicles weighing from 6500 to 15000lbs, with payloads varying from 2500 to 4500 lbs. A "10 ton" might have a capacity of 20,000 to 38,000 lbs depending on model. The old school designations are really only useful when comparing relative chassis and frame specifications.

I think thats changed a bit. There are lift threads just about everyday on there and no one is bashing anybody about that. But their info isnt the greatest when it comes to that stuff. I usually direct the thread starter to CK5 for their suspension lift questions
