Machinists and Metal Workers, I have a question.

I need to make a Slip Roll Machine.
The kind that usually roll sheet metal, into circles.

However, My material is (#9), 3/4"- Flat Expanded.... (3/4" carbon steel grate).
I need to roll 16" circles, out of 9" wide pieces.

All the retail machines are "20ga max".... Unless I spend $6k. :doah:

Is it possible to make a Slip Roll Machine, that rolls #9 flat expanded?
Can any of you machinists point me in the right direction? :dunno:
I cant imagine that a 12" capacity roller, that rolls a 16" diameter circle, is too hard.

Thanks in advance.
what is ( (#9), 3/4"- Flat Expanded) is that expanded metal? if so I can try to roll some at work on our smaller slip roll to let you know if it works

Just to clarify, unless I'm wrong, its 9 Gage, with 3/4 inch holes. The way you write it, is correct, but it sounds like you are saying its 3/4 inch thick, instead of 5/32 of an inch, or .15625 inch.

Probably looks like one of these.

BTW, if it does look like that, I gotta agree that a roller rated for 20 gage would probably handle 9 gage of that style.
Particularly if the roller was not much wider than the metal it was rolling.

I saw a DIY roller that Im gonna copy.
Should be CHEAP to build a 12" setup.

Bet It'll be under $100, and 'built not bought'.

Some of those just use a machined hole in a side plate with oil for the roller bearing. I think I would use a pillow block of some kind. They are fairly cheap, and would both last longer and make rolling it much easier.

Are you using 3/4x9F (flat) expanded or the regular 3/4x9? It might make a difference in how well it will roll. If you use the flat, the 20g machine will probably be alright as long as you make small adjustments on your pinch. It may take a few passes to get where you need to be.

not sure what size I have here but its about 10-12 gauge in thickness, rolled it with the small rolls (little pexto hand crank).......if I was to do these I'd use the power roll, the small one did it but it would fuk it up if you did it a lot
