mad props to tube fab guys...

yeppers, seen the pir8 stuff. I haven't been doing toooo bad with the chop saw method. I have a tubemaster gizmo to help me mark compicated copes. That helps. It takes me a lot of time to get them right, but I haven't had any gaps that were even close to 1/8", let alone 1/4". I (so far, knock on wood!) have had pretty good fit-up.... of course, I haven't got to the really nasty weird looking crap yet. :thumb: Hardest part of coping with the chop saw for me is when you need 2 copes on opposite ends of a tube that have to be perfectly in phase with each other. Its no problem marking tube straight, I can use a level and plum bob... but for some reason its tough to actually chop saw them straight...

another reason this takes lots of time is that my tube, chop saw and tools are on one side of my shop building... the K5 on the other. Lots of moving back and forth. Also, my wife is at work when I work on my rig so she can't help me hold stuff or anything. I spend a healthy amount of time just figuring out how to hold stuff in position. lol! I'm gonna head to HF to grab some more flapper wheels this weekend... prolly pick up a bunch more magnetic jigs and a biiig square too.

he just wrote that, think it links a program where you can print out a cutting guide for the chop saw notching

im haveing fun learning to bend tube its not always easy with the bender i have its just basicaly a 4 ton jack in a small cage with 2 rollers and a die ill get a pic of it later but heres some stuff i have bent "NOTE: they appear to look alot better than they actualy are 55mph beuty type thing i guess"
oh also the stainless tube is way harder to match bends as its about 3 times as springy and flexes back alot more than cold rolled or dom
sorry the pics are crappy
first one is a half way decent copy of a berrin buggy warrior chassis the rest is home built the sliders/nerfbars are stainless steel

this was my first attempt. Learned alot and also took me about 2.5 weekends of hard work. Best investment was a Pro-tool notcher, alittle more money than a HF but not even broke in yet and zero deflection. Life long tool is always cheaper in the long run. IMO

Ohh and Wayne, very nice job on your cage. It was lots of work going thru my dash but I like the look of it. How's your head room.

Thanks. I eventually want to go through the dash too. Head room is ok. The back seat is no longer adult friendly though. The kids don't have a problem with it though.

Judging by the look of your cage, all will walk away from just about any roll.

dude a chop saw is your friend!
Yeah, I know. If I had a garage, Id have all the tools I would need for a project like this.

Now Im finishing this project at my "school" house, which is on a weed/gravel driveway with about a 15* slope. All my tools are either in my room, or in our laundry room. Right now I dont have roommates, so my tools and parts are all through the house.

Damn, I want a garage...

I'll put some up this weekend... I am just dog tired from this week. I get up at 7am or so... work on the K5 until 12:30pm or so... get ready for work... leave for my commute at 1:45pm... start work at 3:30pm... get off at 11:30pm... get home at 12:30pm and start all over again 6.5 hours later. lol! Its one thing to do it every once in a while... its another to do it all week. Saturday I am going to go at it for another 6 hours... then I'm taking a damn nap. ;)

I spent most of today moving whats left of the body (firewall + tub back to the forward-most seat mounting bolt holes) towards the rear of the frame about 2". I hate having the firewall right up against the engine... thats just stupid and a PITA when you are messing with the distributer etc. Anyway, got it moved back a bit and everything clamped into position pretty well. I'm capping off the sliders and getting ready actually attach the foundation of the cage to the frame next. Should be fun!

pics will come, I promise!

not really, mainly because I took 2 weeks off to paint my dads house.

there will be a dedicated thread for the jek-truggy cage tho, rest assured!
