Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

Very cool, looks a lot like a first gen dash.

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

looks good!

looks like a pretty thick aluminum (?)

Are you tweaking the levers for the heater/a/c unit to make it work?

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

1/8" alum.

I've removed the a/c, just running a heater core and the vents on the floor and defroster, that's what the middle square hole is for. Bottom hole is for a Uniden 520, and upper hole is for a shaft style kenwood.

Then holes for autometer phantoms in the flavor of Speedo, Tach, Voltage, Oil Pres, Gas, Tranny temp, and Coolant.

Haven't put the lights, turn signal light, brights light, toggle switches, or wiper switch holes in yet. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

so you still have the control for the heater, right?

i looked at it, and the levers in the back look like they would have to be manipulated to work with a flush mounted unit. have you found that to be the case?

Also, how are you mounting it? and to what?

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

I guess I dont know what you're talking about. I'm mounting mine just like my buddy Micheal's in this pic.

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

so its just screwed into the cage?

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

His is screwed into tabs that he welded to the cage. Mine will be the same way, but it is more contoured and comes out away from the cage quite a bit. I'll post a pic after I get it all installed tonite.

Saving my pennies for the gauges still though.

I must say that I like this !! If the Jimmy wasn't in such good condition I'd start doing things like that. I'm gonna have to own her awhile before I can rip into her like that and start cutting sheetmetal. For a truck that is 24 years old and has never had a body panel repaired or replaced I gotta say that is phenomenal.

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

zakk...the heater control unit mounts from the rear....mine works perfectly. I'm a little hazy about what you mean by,
"the levers in the back look like they would have to be manipulated to work with a flush mounted unit."

On the dash fab, I'm not the guru. That's Mikey...I'm just the young grasshoppa! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You know that pic is just SOOOOOOO wrong. Makes it tough on us poor folk to see you pulling this stuff. BTW, stuff Mike in a box and UPS him up here to Sapulpa so I can put him to work on my stuff /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looks real nice man.

Re: Made a little more progress on the dash today.

Man, sweEEEt! Wish I had facilities (and $$) for something like that. Mine will probably wind up using a simple flat 16ga. steel panel bolted into the cage... Right now it's just a bar with 3 gauges hanging under it. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

any pics of the finished product? /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

BADDOG- You'd be surprised. I got the alum free from a friend. We locked the sheet down in a sheet metal press brake and then hand bent it up to create the rolled angle. I got the bottom angle broke on a hydraulic press brake, the only heavy tool we used. Laid out the holes, and used a hole saw to cut the round ones. Used a drill for a pilot and a jig saw to cut the square ones. Cut the basic shape on a jig saw. Hand filed the rough edges. Only thing it took a lot of was time...about 6 hours in all.

Sounds like the only thing I'm missing is the friend with free aluminum and the other friend with access to a break. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
