Made an XJ shaft work for the older splined columns

Well I made an xj shaft work for the older 1” 48 spline column. I bought a steering u joint with that splined end on one side:

Then bought an xj shaft:

I carefully ground and file down the metal tabs that were pressed in holding the u joint in place on the shaft, the other u joint had screws to retain the u joint caps so those were easily removed..

Got creative with c clamps and various socket sizes to press the the u joint back and forth until I got the caps off. The caps were different outside diameters, but the inner bearing surface size was the same, so I was able to swap the caps and use the screws to retain the caps.
I tried to attach pictures but they’re too big with the iPhone 17 ‍♂️
 
With these newer phones (android too), you have to change the settings to a lower photo quality if the intention is to post them on forums.

Like was mentioned, a screenshot works. Or you can message the pictures to yourself, then save them from the message. That will downgrade the quality enough that it should work.
 
I run an IPhone 16pro.
I just crop the size of my pics every time. It’s not even an issue.
Just long hold the pic. Tap “crop” resize it to a smaller size(I don’t know what fits or not) then share it here. I do it all the time. what I hauled Friday…

I tried resizing, editing, cropping with no luck but I’m not picture/camera savvy so I might have done something wrong.. and I’m not gonna reduce the image quality of pictures bc I might post them, and then have to change it back, it would be ideal if the website could just accept high quality pictures..
But it lol looks like the screen shot idea worked good.
This pic shows it completed, with the tools I used and then a pic of it installed.. shaft I bought had metal pins so I drilled those down enough to get the shaft to collapse, but with my body lift it ended up at the length it started. I thought about loosening the column so I didn’t have to drill the pins and collapse it, but then the thought of having to do it again when I remove next time made me re-think that idea..

Overall not bad for $79 and a couple hours tinkering
