Would a 87-91 Suburban made for CA have different emmissions equipment than those made for the rest of the country? I know new vehicles must be made for CA emmissions laws in order to be sold in CA new, so I assumed this means their equip is a little different, but I'm not sure how long they've been doing that, anyone know?

theyve been doing it since the 60s (it was just a smog pump back then) so yeah the emissions equip is probably different... but i dont think you can just rip off the CA only stuff when the vehicle gets to a new state (when smog checks are still applicable anyways)

Barring any mechanical differences (AIR, no AIR, etc, just as examples) as a general rule, the PROM in the ECM is different for CA applications.

Guess it just depends what all you consider "emissions equipment".

Can I tell from the VIN or the RPO code if it was manufactured for CA or not?

Look at the smog equipment sticker under the hood. It should say Kali or federal.

I'll check tomorrow to be sure but i beleive it is right ontop of the front of the truck. Mine is on the passenger side near the battery. Not sure what you would call that part of the truck but its the same thing the hood locks to.

Also didn't the cali trucks come with different vaccum setups?

That piece is called the core support. All one piece.

Stickers are along the flat surface that the hood latch bolts to. Probably about 50% of them are gone. No idea why people feel the need to remove them. :(

Apparently you can't tell by VIN the destination of the truck.

The underhood emissions label is the white sticker, the one that says the engine size in the corner. Itll say "This vehicle meets...."
