Magazine Coverage of Big Bear trip

No, not at all! You do have tow straps just in case, right? Looks like we will have some snow, it is supposed to really snow hard this week and weekend! I am most likely going up this weekend to do some snow wheeling!! Also, if any of you guys have snow chains, that might be a good idea to bring them along just in case! They are the ultimate traction aiding devices!

Any word on which trails we are thinking of doing? I am going up this weekend, plan on doing some snow run fun, thought maybe I'd try some of the ones we were interested in to see how difficult they might be for everyone. The snow is fun, but for most of the technical sections (the rock gardens, hill climbs, etc), it would be awfully sketchy...slipping off rocks was not very fun last time I tried it. But we have over two weeks, and knowing Southern California snow, it will be melting away by then! :)

As far as I know, every one has decided on Jan. 27th. As for the trails we are going to run, I thiught we would wait to see what kind of trucks show up and decide from there. That's where you guess, kpanza, Who go up there alot come in!!

Yeah, that sounds good. My guess is that just about everyone will be able to do Holcomb Creek, unless there is a lot of snow on everything. But I guess we will see when we get there! I am going up Friday night, don't know if I will be wheeling around Big Bear, probably be spending time around Green Valley and those trails. Snow runs can be quite slow!! ha,ha That reminds me, might be a good idea for everyone to try and bring a shovel when we go, just in case. And let's decide on which channel we will be monitoring for the cbs that day also, just in case anyone has problems finding the meeting place or is late. I have a regular Cobra cb as well as a couple of Motorola hand held radios...this is gonna be great!

Not to rush anyone, but are any of you thinking of going to Tierra del Sol in March?? I think it would be cool to have some K5s show up in force!!

Ok,

Let me get this straight. We will be meeting at the Walmart in Highland between 7:30 and 8:00am on Saturday the 27th. Directions from San Diego county are as follows:

Take the 15 north to the 10 west to the 30 north. When you see the 330 turn off to Running Springs, go north to the Highland off ramp and turn left. You can't miss it. It is right at the end of Boulder.

Yahoo map below:

Shovels would be a good thing to have with you incase of snow problems and such. All the recovery gear you have (jacks, straps, fluids, ect., ect., ect.).

CB channel is still unknown.

And we are going to have a freaking blast.

Oh ya, David Kennedy Feature Editor of 4-Wheel & Off-Road Magazine is going with us and is going to shoot the trip for a three page story in the magazine.

Did I miss anything?

CaliforniaK5 - I would suggest taking the 215 rather than the 15. Look it up on Yahoo, it will give you better directions. But basically you want to take the 15 up to the 215 split, then take the 215 all the way to the 10 basically (stay on the right offramp!) and then to the 30 to Running Springs exit. I believe that the Walmart physical address is actually Highland Avenue. I will try to get the exact address, then everyone can just go to yahoo and get driving directions from their address to the Walmart, that way you can print them out and it will be easy! OK, I found it - the address for WalMart is: 4210 Highland Avenue, Highland, CA 92346. Hope that helps everyone!

Shovels, straps, shackles, warm clothes, parts, fluids, lunch, drinks, Adventure Pass, cb, cell phone if you have one, gloves, air compressors to air back up. Just the usual parts that your truck needs I guess! Extra gas cans if you have a fuel hog like mine!! (But gas stations are not very far away, so not too big a deal if we all fill up once we get up the hill). Yes, this WILL be fun!!

The 4210 address is the other Walmart, too far west of the one we will be at. Best thing to do print the map I posted above.

My mistake!! Sorry guys, big error!! It is actually a BIG K-MART!!! (Not a Walmart) And the real address is : 26655 HIGHLAND AVE, HIGHLAND, CA 92346. I kept thinking it was a Walmart for some reason, but it isn't. Oh well, try that address, that is the correct one. Sorry for any inconvenience. It must be the snow on my brain!!! ha,ha I can't wait to go up there!!! :) One more day...

I'm so pumped about this. Just hope I don't break anything.

Holy Sh**!!!! These pills for my strep throat must have made me stupid or something last week!! The store IS WALMART! It's just that their web site doesn't list the address for that store! Unbelievable! But I drove by Friday night and confirmed with my own eyes on the way to do some wheeling, so it IS A WALMART!! You can't miss it anyway, so just use the map that Blazen91 put up here, you'll find it easily.

Anyway, was up there all weekend, didn't do much wheeling as I didn't have a partner. I did pull some people out, there were a lot of stuck cars and trucks. We had about 3 feet on the ground, so the trails I went to see were pretty much a pain in the $ss!! Most were still untouched, and would have been fun had I had a partner along to help me, but since I didn't, I played it safe and decided to wait for another day. It is snowing up there right now as I write this, so we are gonna be faced with a lot of snow I expect! Should be real fun!! If you have chains I would suggest bringing them along, with all of your other parts and shovels, etc. Hopefully we have a few winches (I have one) in the group, and lots of tow straps!! :) Bring those air compressors if you have them, cause we're gonna have to air down a lot for the snow!!

Sorry for the confusion on the stores, that KMArt is actually down the street a few blocks, as is the other Walmart a little farther. But just get off at the Running Springs exit and you will have no problem finding it.

Ok, just got an email from David Kennedy, he is all set to meet us up there! One thing he asked was that we try to keep his presence sort of "hush-hush", ok? Sounds like the forest service thinks they should make money off of this...but he said everything would be ok. So, we will just keep a low presence when he gets there, ok?

Like I said, they had a LOT of snow last weekend, and it has snowed the past two days, almost another foot! So, we should be in for lots of white stuff! And I saw that there is a chance for another storm mid-week next week!! So pack them blankets, cold weather clothes, and all of your emergency gear, just in case all hell breaks loose!! ha,ha Shovels and chains may be worth their weight in gold!! Talk to ya guys more as we get closer...and don't forget those Adventure Passes!!
