Have the Tranny out on my 85 burb and decided to replace the rear main seal and inspect the main-webs. Well, lets just say I saw the crack and could definitely feel it. :doah:

bummer. Was planning on doing a cummins swap but now may end up with a 6.5l if I can find something at a decent price...I kinda wanted to drive that 6.2 around a bit first...

Anyone got a good 6.3 block sitting around? LOL

At least I'm not at work.

That sucks.
I was going to replace the rear main seal while I had the motor out but decided against it, If you never see it will it ever be a problem? Never know right. But once you see it you have to fix it.

Anyway, good luck.

update

Got around to pulling the motor this weekend (finally) because I managed to source two motors locally :D, hopefully one of them will work out.

Turns out both sides of both inner main webs have through-and-through cracks

Hopefully I can breath some life into this old beast again and wheel the dang thing a little.

here is a pic of one of the cracks

That one isn't too bad; the crack doesn't extend below the bottom of the bolt hole yet. If that is the worst crack and I were building a motor I would consider stop drilling it and installing splayed main caps.

I never considered that before but that is an option. The two motors I've found locally are cheap enough and the guy agreed to pull them and let me inspect the main-webs before I take it home so It may work out that. If not I'll consider the splayed main caps.

What I really need is to live in Mesa Az lol

man I got family in Glendale, Phoenix, Prescott, and Camp Verde. Next time i need a motor I'll just make a "trip" out of it!

:p:
