Hello all. I have a 1979 K10 with an automatic and a non tilt column. I was curious if anyone knew if it was possible to convert the existing column to a tilt column. I am an auto tech by trade but really haven't pulled one of these columns apart to see if it was possible or worth the effort. I figure with the knowledge base here, someone would know. Thanks

nope.... well anything is potentially doable... but a million x's easier to just source a tilt wheel.. at least 75% of the parts are completely different... shaft, cover panels, etc...

That's kind of what i figured, but it was worth asking. I'll see if i can find one reasonably priced.

If I may suggest something, you could post that you are looking for one in the parts wanted section, but give us a general idea of where you are at. I have a column for a '79 auto but I am in western Colorado and that may be a long way from you.

You should be able to get one cheap...I got one I could give you if you were close.

BTW You joined in 02 Paul Joined in 03 I like the post count difference. :haha:

I never figured that I'd be pushing 20 g's at some point.... :haha:

I got the tilt for my CUCV, and an XJ intermediate shaft (no crappy rag joint) at a pick/n pull for a grand total of 40 bucks. The column even got me wiper delay upgrade :D

I'm in NY. Don't mind paying shipping on a reasonably priced piece.

I assume you are asking for tilt because you NEED it, not because you want it.

Not a fan of the tilt columns myself, even though they are far more common than non-tilt. Less things to go wrong, and they do go wrong.

No i don't NEED one, but it would make it a bit more enjoyable to drive.

i changed my K5 from a tilt to non.. and I've been driving Mutt for 9 months now, and have never moved the tilt... I'm not a fan, they fail and I like the wheel in the stock position anyway..

Same here. I installed tilt, have dealt with the loose upper section and mechanism that will change positions under force, yet it stays in the same position as a non-tilt all the time. No reason to change it from "straight back". I've noticed tilting the wheel skews gauge viewing too, if you are still running stock ones.

What these trucks really need for comfort, is telescopic steering.
