Been mulling the idea of posting this here for awhile, finally figured why not.

Any reason not to use an old 20lb propane tank as a fluid dispensing vessel? I ended up with one with the old style valve on it, and I have plenty of good tanks already, thought maybe it would work for any of the various oils we tend to use.

I figured out pretty quickly that the piece they use to vent the tank as they fill it can be removed, and if you put air to that location, will pressurize the tank. Duh.

If one were to adapt a schrader valve to that location (assuming it's NPT), or anything you could clip a tire chuck on, and run a hose from the outlet of the tank with a ball valve, I don't see many downsides.

Only problems I do see are that you can't tell how much fluid you are moving, so engine and tranny fills might be tough, and filling the tank initially might be a bit annoying, but not impossible. It also probably wouldn't move thicker fluids like gear oil very quick when cold, but still much easier than what it comes in. Not to mention for something like gear oil, I wouldn't have boxes of 1 quart bottles stacked up.

I know there are things like pumps and what not you can buy for these purposes, this just seems like a decent use for something that is already laying around, especially if you already have compressed air that is dry.

I did that same thing with a helium tank
Mine has a bottom outlet and a top air fitting that is removable for filling the tank
I have a ball valve attached to a hose for the outlet
Works great I keep my t/c and diff lube in it and at about 20lbs of pressure its the cats ass for filling those under truck fill ports!

I put a valve stem on an old fire extinguisher with a screw in top. Filled it with some 80w90 and put shop air to it. Works pretty good, makes filling diffs and Tcases a breeze.

It'll shoot a 1/2 stead stream of gear lube about 10 feet lol

That was another idea, is there a fitting you threaded the valve stem into, or did you just drill and tap a spot?

The one I used was like a disposable extinguisher, like the actual nozzle/handle area totally unscrews from the canister.

So I just drill a 3/8 or whatever size hole valve stems use and pulled it through like they are on a wheel

I love mine for hooking air up to and installing manual transmission fluid, gear oil etc. Even a shop I use to work at and 919jackass works at has one for there.

Been using this type of tank for carrying compressed air, but I hadn't thought of that use.

I like the fire extinguisher idea a lot. Will probably do that.

I have used 20 lb propane tanks as gas tanks for lawn tractors and other "yard equipment" and go carts...I used the metal (brass) truck valve stems in a drilled hole as the fuel outlet..

You can buy a kit to convert a LP tank to an "air pig" tank at places like Harbor Freight,I think they would work for fluids as well as air probably..

I have an old stainless steel fire extinguisher I got from a school when they upgraded their whole supply of them--it has a metal schrader valve stem just like a tire to fill it with compressed air,and the top unscrews to allow you to fill it with water..I have it in my house ,ready to go...I have wood stoves and you can never be too careful..

Might mix in some baking soda in with the water in that extinguisher. Makes the water a little thicker so it does not run off as bad, and when the soda dries and gets hot it releases carbon dioxide which helps put out the fire.

My helium tank turned lube tank
I had Kert weld a bung to the bottom for the outlet

I did mine with a 20 gallon? portable air pig. Put a rejected beadlock ring on the bottom of it with some wheels. 1/4 turn ball valve so it can be charged with air and then moved around without needing to keep the air hose attached. Course runs out of air before too long, but its quite enough to fill a couple of diffs and more.
