i just spent 2hrs draining / flushing / my fuel tank and removing the carb and flushing / scraping / cleaning & reassembling .

all this on my lawn mower . :doah:

in the last 2 years of so i have had nothing but problems with my lawn mower and gas. yes diffrent stations to try diffrent fuels.

the 10-15% federal mandate of ethanal fuel mix for all fuels sucks big time.

this stuff sucks up water 10-20x faster than reg old gas. i had so much crap in the tank it wouldnt run. so i drained it and refilled. then still wouldnt run so i pulled the carb out and removed the bowl. wow :eek1: what a pile of rust/crap/scale inside of there.

scraped / filed / rinsed out all the crap i could. then reassembled the whole lawn mower and she finaly fired up and now runs good. my mom even said it sounds better than it has in a long time.

the fed's need to get there f__kin heads out of our gas and tires ( tire pressure sensors ) and get a fu__in life and get the more important stuff done first.

pic #1 = bowl. almost 1/16" thick of junk
pic #2 = some sensor or valve in bottom of bowl. full of junk
pic #3 = tiny bit of gas on top of all the junk from tank and carb clean out. prob still some junk in my electric fuel pump i used to remove gas from tank.

sorry for my rant but i hope this helps someone else.

really they require the 10% ethanol BS in all 50 staes now? thats so ****in stupid.

I lived within an Hour and a half of south dakota for about ten years in Mn. (Mn requires 10% ethanol mixed in) and the Sd people Ive talked to say about 2-3 mpg better with Sd fuel instead of the garbage ethanol.

its a nice idea, but doesnt really work well here in the real world.

Fuk ethanol

fed if not state law = sticker must be on the pump to show if it has a % of ethanol in the mix.

only 1 place here in town that is supost to not have it.

and yes fuel milage goes in the craper.

the nonoxygenated 91 Octane isnt supposed to have it and its reccomended for old cars, lawnmowers, atvs' etc.

its kinda spendy though

I dont know about the 91 octain fuel but interesting.I alwas run super because my chainsaws require it and its just easier to have one fuel tank for them all.I have noticed less problems with my lawn mower and splitter as far as they start good in the begining of the season after sitting all winter but I always ad staybil fuel stabilizer to my 5 gal can every time I fill it so that may be helping also.

I've repaired small engines as a hobby and to make a few bucks most of my life, and I agree the Ethanol isn't doing any old carberated engine any favors..the fuel is formulated for todays fuel injected engines and anything with a carb dont run like they used too on the leaded gas they were designed for..the alcohol leans the mixture out and most small engine carbs no longer have adustments for the idle and main fuel mixtures or they are capped (thanks to the frds!)--so as a result they run poorly, tend to run hotter and burn valves sooner or suffer catastrophic failure, add the fact they make new engines from die cast crap and cheaper than ever, with poor OHV designs ,your lucky to get 5 years out of one now..

If you saw a lot of black residue in the carb bowl, its likely the old rubber fuel lines aren't ethanol compatable and are deteriorating from the inside out..I've had to replace ALL the fuel hoses in many lawn tractors due to this...its correct the ethanol allows more water to be dispersed in the gas too,and when you take a sample, you may not see the water readily,as it will not tend to settle to the bottom as it did in older gas without ethanol...

The 2 strokes on weedwhackers and other things like chain saws, etc seem most vulnerable, they dont like alcohol!..their carb diaphrams stiffen up in no time and wont pump, and they run very hot..here we cant buy any other type of gas,its ethanol or nothing!..

A tip for any of you facing the task of cleaning a rusty mower gas tank--I use old battery acid from junk batteries--eill the tank about half full and slosh it around, and let it sit for about 15 minutes..the rust will flush out with water after and the tank will be like new inside..I put a bit of Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas on tanks I've cleaned this way to help discourage further rusting..also,I got a lot of riding mowers that will start and run fine under no load, but when you start mowing or lug the engine under a load it'll act like it ran out of gas--usually that indicates water in the gas,or the wrong gas filter is on it--engines with no fuel pumps cant use filters designed for engines with one, they have a higher restriction to flow due to the finer microm filtration and wont let enough gas flow to a carb using gravity feed--I have had to remove many "car" universal gas filters on lawn tractors and replace them with one with a brass screen that will not restrict the flow too much!..Kohler engines seem particulary fussy about having the correct gas filter...

Wow. Learn something new everyday. I didnt realize ethanol was so bad. My Burbs seem impervious to bad gas, but we run nothing but 91 octane in the Nav and prolly have to in the motorhome since its carbed.

But now that I think about it, I had issues with my lawnmowers a few years back. Had bought some gas from the place on base, and after the first mower died, I just thought the carb had gone bad. Bought a new mower and it also pooped out after one tank. Not wanting to admit defeat, I cleaned both plugs, and drained the fuel tanks/lines. Got gas from another place downtown and both mowers fired right up and never had issues again. But on base was using 10% ethanol before off base was(uncle Sam's green initiative). Might have been it :dunno:
