Man I\'m Bummed!!

I don't mind spending money on my toys when I want to, but I hate doing it because I have to! My hinges on my truck are really sagging. So...I got new hinges from gmpartsdirect.com. Saved a bundle. I went to install them this weekend and discovered that's not a simple job. I can just see me dropping the door when I remove the old hinges (after I figure out where the hell the inside bolt is at) and scrape up the door or bend it while ripping all the electrical for the power doors/windows out! But, they really sag. I have to get the hinges replaced before I damage the doors. So, I am taking my truck to a local shop tomorrow to have them install my hinges. They said 3-4 hours labor to install both sides and align them. At $70 an hour, that's well over $200!

Then, my Mom is coming in to visit my grandparents this weekend and she plans to use my car while in town. BUT...the inspection and registration on it both expired last month. Those don't bother me too much, but the radial belts showing through the front tires do. So...I now also have to get new front tires for it. Those damn things cost more than my BFG MT 35s!! And they only last about 30,000 miles a set!

Damn, I don't mind spending money to play, but I hate it when it all goes wrong at once!!

Just had to gripe a little. Thanks for the avenue to vent.

Re: Man I\'m Bummed!!

You're singing my song! This weekend, we're pulling the camaro up to a mechanic freind and we aren't bringing it back until it's fixed. We've already dumped 800 bucks into it and it still is broke and getting worse every day. About the time we were dumping all this money into the camaro, the motor on the blazer went out. I know how you feel. It sucks!

It's been lovely, but I have to scream now.

Re: Man I\'m Bummed!!

Can you get the hinges out one at a time? I know I did my GM car that way, with some help...loosen both hinges up as much as possible without the bolts falling out, then have someone hold the door, and move it as necessary until the old hinge falls out. Again, not positive this will work on a truck, but if you have PW/PDL, this procedure would make it ten times easier.

No anti-theft measures on your truck? No pity when its stolen

Re: Man I\'m Bummed!!

For the passenger side, you can remove the fender in about 20-30 mins and you have easy acces to the hinges. This won't work for the driver's side though because of all the wires and cables that GM decided to route through the fender, but maybe you can loosen it enough to gain access to the hinges. OR .. you can remove all the bolts that hold the door on and move it slightly out of the way (just a couple inches though). If you do this just make sure that you have the door propped up and possibly hanging from something.

just think you could be like all those other people out there on the roads who look at you going down the road and think "man i wish i had a cool rig like that" as their minivan swerves off the road and gets stuck in the tall grass in the median

It needs a bigger motor.
what's in it now?
doen't matter it NEEDS A BIGGER MOTOR

Re: Man I\'m Bummed!!

HOLD UP a sec! Don't spend that kind of money to get hinges installed! I just fixed my 75 drivers door this past weekend. Autozone or Checker sells a pin/bushing kit that should solve the problem. Usually the original pin and bushing wear out, and replacing them isn't all that hard. Mark the hinge locations on the door and the body. Take the door off. Remove the bottom hinge. Grind down the peened part of the pin, drive it out, replace all the pieces, peen the end with a cold chisel. Do the top hinge the same way, in place on the body. Reinstall the door with the hinges in the original location. You will need an extra person to help hold the door when you take it off and put it back on. HTH...

Re: Man I\'m Bummed!!

I hear ya Buddy... You are talking to a guy who is gonna be swapping in his 4th rear axle and 3rd front axle since late May. But also beside that I just shelled out tuition money for school and have less then a week before school starts. So we all feel your pain. If you were closer to MN I could get a great price on tires, but shipping would ruin it. Cheer up man... It's only money... or in some case... ceredit card debt LOL.

Re: Man I\'m Bummed!!

It's not that hard to replace the hinges. I did it in about an hour by myself. It really isn't as hard and time consuming as you think.

Re: Man I\'m Bummed!!

I did both of my doors this spring on my 74 by myself. I don't have a great paint job or power windows and locks but it didn't take that long and I had to only replace the bushings. It only cost a few bucks and now my doors shut perfectly.

Maybe its only your bushings that are bad?

Re: Man I\'m Bummed!!

You can take the whole front clip off in 10 minutes with air tools. The harness has a plug at the fire wall. 2 bolts through the inner fenderwells bot sides to fire wall, bolt under the cowel, bolt abouve top door hinges, bolt at rocker. and 2 core suport bolts. Should be enough give in the hoses to get enough room to do the job one side at a time and have a bud to help lift the clip.
But I ask this...were the hinges so bad they couldn't be rebuilt with the $5 kit from the help section in most parts stores? You can do a hinge at a time without removing the door or fender and just stack something under the door to suport the weight.

It's not my damn planet monkey boy!

Re: Man I\'m Bummed!!

yeah, the metal in my hinges was in bad shape. Got a good deal on the hinges so I figured I would just do it right. Just didn't realize how difficult "right" would be. The biggest problem is the bolt coming from inside the cab to the top hinge on the driver's side. Getting to that bolt head is practically impossible. Even if I did get the front fenders out of the way, that bolt is still a problem.

Just grind that bolt off and leave it off ... what could one less bolt on the door harm *L*
