I used the brass ones when I put mine back together. To the eye they looked to be in really good condition and if they lasted for 20 years why would they not last longer? Surely they will last longer than plastic:rolleyes:.

I wouldn't hesitate to run either of them. That is the thrust washer if you will and it will ONLY see load when the hubs are locked. I run the plastic ones and they seem to be fine. Remember the front shaft only spins when the hubs are locked or it is in four wheel drive.
I do like the idea of the brass thrust washer and would run them if I had them but I don't.

BTW the slingers are also and ORD item they just aren't advertised.:rolleyes:

Things looking good. I remember being all excited about painting things like axles and now I look at that as being silly. You are just going to rub it all off and it cracks around the stress points.
I still did it and if I was building my stuff agian I would paint it but now I wouldn't care about the details that I went through and I know you are as well.

hey muddy its been rainin for 2 days now!!! we got some "real"mud now!!! i went into a mud hole today that was up past my axles in waterymud(not cow chit)LOL almost got stuck but put it in 4lo and LO gear and got out

Just for the record, and the few that may not know, there is such a tool as a bearing race driver for those of us that are anal about the right tool for the job...

Yup, the method you used was one I've done when younger and not as well-equipped, as many have, but the race installers are a fool-proof tool and nice to have...

Mine are Snappy's, not bad, about $75 iirc... Pretty sure Mac and Matco have em too.. Craftsmen, not so sure...

Btw, got a good giggle from the boxing metaphor... :D

at least he has progress, all you do is change your mind over and over you should try not to spoil a good informative thread

Just a quick tip. The next time you want to use a rag to protect something from all those little metal shavings and chips, soak the rag with oil or at least water and they'll stick to it a lot better. It will also make it easier to pull your rag out without losing any.
Your doing a nice job and a good build thread.
 
Another tip I read was don't go anymore than a half turn forward for thread cutting and no further than 3/4 deep with the cutter. The idea being if you go deeper you take a chance of the threads bottoming out before they tighten up on the sides.:D
