.My spindles had their bearings pressed in too!

How does one extract the old spindle bearings? I searched and didnt find a good answer, stuck at that step on my D60

I used a pair of channel locks. You can also use a punch and break the cage. If you are replacing them there is no need to remove them in one piece just break the ****ing thing out.

Thanks BK,

I appreciate that too. I have to confess I was really nervous...okay, scared, to do this. I didn't want to mess up my D60, so I took it nice and slow and tried to remember everything y'all told me in posts I read. I see that I forgot a few things. Got it printed out and in the manual so I don't forget!

Thanks for sharing!

Manny

call me lazy, I went through building a 60 once..not alot of fun, the one I have has really good condition king pins..since its a buggy with limmited street use im running them, im stuffing in the detroit and my 35 spline chromos some hubs and going wheeling.

btw I lve your attention to detail, it also is great for people new to the hobby or who like pics, keep it up dude, great job and looks like your having fun..:wink1:

I've been enjoying this thread from day 1 and I just have to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Manny. I'm a few steps behind him and his tutorial is proving to be a very valuable resource. When finished, this thread needs to be edited / sorted and compiled into the "King Manny Version of the D60 Bible".

I thought I was the only one with some taste for colors around here. My 60 will be the same black & gray (decided before I saw you do it) but the blue axle shafts are over the top. Since my truck will be painted a very similar color, I'm going to steal your idea.:bow::bow:

yur doin a great job on your truck, and this thread. Keep it up there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Won't be long until its fun time. The axle colors are good, I went with Semi gloss black, on the axle tube, then grabber green on the knucles, then back and forth with green and black. The yoke and axle shafts I painted yellow. Kinda looks like a DANA LEGO 60 :haha:

WOW great buildup!!! but i want to know do you think that mud sand, water and all the mess that comes with mud holes will stay out of those axels. then what complete teardown best wishes

I will be sealing the Warn Lockout Hubs with RTV...

Manny
Also take a look at the screws that hold the outer part of the hub to the inner part. That looks like a perfect place for water to seep in when the axle is submerged. I put O-rings on those screws so that they seal tight when installed. :cool1:

I'm sure that we'll meet up at a mud hole in the near future. I'm just down the road from ya... You probably drive right by here on your way to San Antonio. :cool1:

Can't wait to see it under the truck Manny! :D

Just a little note to you on paint-type stuff...

Not sure what the primer your using there is, but.... If you are just priming, letting dry, then painting, you are much more likely to have paint chip or fail...

If you are doing it that way, try to get the paint on the primer as soon as the primer flashs off pretty dry. Thats called wet on wet application and will help by allowing the paint to etch into the still soft primer..

A better way is to take a red scuff pad to the primer once it's dry before painting.. Usually a quick process even on oddball shapes, and that "cut" will really give the paint a good bond..

One other thing I'll bring up here for ya that most tend to ignore in here is it really pays to use a little zinc chromate on your bare steel before priming... Many primers, especially anything out of a rattlecan don't have the best adhesion properties to bare steel. A piss-coat of zinc chromate before primer will make the refinish way more durable.. And I do mean pisscoat, couple quick passes, you should be able to see thru the zinc...

One can of this stuff will last many, many parts...

I then inserted the axle shafts into the axle. I tried twisting the u-joints. Man they were tight, and used a good amount of force to move. That scared me a little bit, because I felt that I may have damaged them with the hammer. Turns out, when taking to my friend Jim, he said that was normal, and everything would be okay. I know, I know....

The same thing happens when installing U-joints in a driveshaft. The caps are pressed against the ends of the trunnions. Once the joint is installed, you need to "persuade" the yokes with a hammer in such a way that you're pushing each of the caps outward just slightly, to fully seat it against it's retaining clip. They barely move, but they will move just enough to loosen up the movement. (Failing to do this on a driveshaft that is working at an angle will cause the grease to burn up and the joint will fail quickly. An axle shaft typically isn't rotating as much, so it will last longer).

Well it took me two days to read this thread. I got drunk reading it yesterday. Good job Manny and git-r-done. Nice job on the pics and writeup. Makes me a bit braver to take apart my 60. Keep it up.

Manny, I read a post in here once upon a time, about tack welding the caps to the stubshafts so they don't move, have you done any research on this?
I know it would raise hell with the grease inside, but just a thought.

Great postings, and pics keep em coming.

All I can say is, I wish I had 1/2 your enthusiasm and drive!! Keep up the good work!!!

Hey Manny....

Anything to help.. :D

Well, you could check your local auto parts, but thats a 50/50 shot if they'll have zinc chromate... Any bodyshop supply or marine store will have it...

It is available in 2 part sprayable too at any body supply place.. Little superior quality to the rattle cans, but the spray bombs are fine...

Also for top primers, epoxy will always be superior to any enamel...

If you have ANY questions on anything like this, shoot me a PM... :wink1:

Manny, we got a problem. You have no clue how to install the 3 finger, left handed smoke shift. Just send that axle here to north carolina and Ill fix it and not return it.:D Naw just kidding. Its looking good and I can't wait to see that bad boy running.
