I've been having problems with the boat (1978 305 chevy). It'll start after alot of cranking and idle for about 1 1/2 minutes then it just dies and won't start until I crank it for a while. It starts right up with a little carb cleaner sprayed in it but then dies right away. Also it seems like it runs only when the choke is on, then once it starts to open up it dies. What could this be? Fuel pump or filter?

Also how does a manual choke work?

If it'll only run with the choke on you have a vac leak somewhere...likely the base of the carb. A choke whether manual or electric, or choke stove style all do the same thing. They limit the amount of air to the carb, which gives the cold engine a nice rich mixture.

Auto chokes like the electric or choke stove style have an element that slowly opens the choke blade as it heats up. Manual is usually a cable operated dealy that you slowly adjust as the engine warms up.

My twin carb'd Volvo inboard I used to have didn't have a choke at all...I guess the thinking was how often do you use it in cold weather anyways? On a warm summer day it'd run a bit miserable for about 30 seconds or so.

My line of thinking is that the fuel filter may be clogged from old gas gumming up during winter. Is there any way that could be a filter?

I'll check for leaks.

I dont mean to sound rude, but change the filter, especial;ly if its the stock carb one.

OTOH Dont be like me; rebuild your quad only to forget to put the spring behind the filter and wonder why the carb aint working right 6 months later. Or, have your float level rediculously high(I swear I checked that a million times)

Good luck with your carb
