Manual or auto?

[ QUOTE ]
I'd be wondering why the automadic transmissions keep failing. I do like the sm465 manual transmission, but in the mud, and everyday driving a automadic is nice.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well I busted the case on this one. The others just died. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I'm going to run a manual this go round. After dealing with heat and adding every component I can including the largest cooler known to man and still not really getting the temps down where I wanted them to heck with it all. I wonder how hard or if its even possible to set up some kind of air shifter for a little quicker shifts.

I perfer autos in mud so you can concentrate on driving, not shiftingg or down shifting /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Shifting should come as second nature. If you have to concentrate on shifting, then a manual is not for you.

Do you think the th-400's you had before were rebuilt properly or something? How much torque does your engine make?

I don't have to concentrate on shifting, it's just a pain to have to shift if the motor bogs down.

Shifting is not a problem for me I drive my mom's F-350 with a manual all the time. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I don't mind shifting either, the Freightliner that I drive every night has a 13 speed.

I do think I'm going to go to a manual in my K20. No more transmssion lines and cooling issues /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

13 gears /forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif That would be a workout the first few times you drove it.

[/ QUOTE ]Its not that bad.

Ring master, Why can't you use a th400? /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

My frame was designed for the a TH350 and it would be a pain to move the crossmember. It would also make the driveshaft angle in the rear worse.

I dont have a preference one way or another but keep in mind that if you are using your rig hard enough to break a bellhousing and are going through TH350's left and right you will also be going through clutches on a fairly regular basis. Prolly the best bet for you would be a built TH400 for an auto or a top of the line clutch and new flywheel (or at least a good one thats been machined) for the manual. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I had a turbo 400 with a b&m shiftkit... was ok.. could churp 33's in 1st and second... pull up to a mudpit and full throttle... up hill... aim and full throttle...hope you make it...

then I went to a stick... well here is what I went from:
350/turbo400/NP203/d44-3.73/14bolt-3.73
to
350/SMC465/NP205/d44-4.56/14bolt-4.56

yeah i also got different gears as I bought a different truck and swapped my body over... but I noticed how much more control I had on hill climbs and mud...
I prefer stick and will never go back to manual...

Im even thinking in the future to go NV5600 /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

there is a place about 45 min from me that rebuilt my boss th400 for his drag car it has lasted 3 sesons!!!, when all the guys he know that sent them to the states blew in a year or even less!!!
hes running 10s in a 455 ho. no problems

SM465 is the way to go, now I really feel the power of my 454. Before with the auto the shifts were kind of sluggish, especially when accelerating hard and when towing the engine temperatures would start rising. Now with the manual I can tow my friends Heep up in the mountains and the temperature stays nice and low. The damn thing is so strong now that I can actually take off in third gear. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

add another manual, im about to swap in my 465/205, im just waiting for my 700r4 to blow up, im thinking of draining out all the fluid to speeden up the procsess /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Try pounding the gears on a 465 in a mudpit at 5,500 RPM or so sometime and come back and tell me that.

As to my opinion:

Road.....manual
Towing....manual
Trails.....manual, OR auto with a doubler
Mud and not much else......automatic with high stall torque converter

I run the 465 as it is a poor man's doubler with hydro clutch, and I'd probably never go back to autos, I hate autos with a passion.

In mud, nothing beats the point and shoot of an auto though.

chalk another up for the 465. gives you an extra excuse to touch the old lady's leg when she's using the SOB seat... /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

for some $$ we can design a face tooth shift clutch modification kit
it will shift into gear no matter what if you pull the lever
no idea what carnage will follow
it would be up to you to match engine rpm to ground speed as close as you can, or suffer the consequences when you cannot get them matched
look at a jerico or motorcycle transmission shift clutches also refered to as "dogring"
you pull the lever as soon as the parts line up it engages
with a bang if you mismatch, or smooth as silk if you get it right
but it IS going to engage unlike normal external/internal meshing shift clutches

coming soon

I don't know if this will make a differance in your thoughts but my motor is not a real high RPM motor the most I have ever turned it is 4500. It was designed for low RPM power. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
