I have a future mod in mind and I'd like to know whether or not there is a 5 Speed Manual tranny out there that will work in place of my 700R4 and NP 241C TC?

Nothing will be a bolt-in deal, but the sm465 is the most common option with an nv4500 being another.

i was reading about the T-56 six speed.

The T56 is a good trans but its not geared very low at all. First gear is usually 2.66 or 2.97:1, you'll need some pretty deep gears in the axles to make it driveable (which would help make the super tall 6th gear usable too).

Also, the T56 is going to be difficult to adapt to your transfer case because it was never used in a 4WD truck. You'd probably have to go to a divorced transfer case. And of course you'd be in for a lot of custom crossmember work too.

If you're looking for an OD 5 speed, you should be looking for a NV3500 or NV4500. The NV3500 will be cheaper and easier to find but its not as heavy duty as the NV4500, it depends on what you do with the truck. There are many 3500's out there living long lives behind V8's.

Along with it being mega long...the shifter would be somewhere around the back of the front seats...

Do a NV4500 or Sm465. Both great transmissions, find a hydraulic set-up for ease of the swap and be happy.

I put her to work daily. Every day I drive is an offroad adventure. I average 2500 to 4500 miles monthly.

does this mean no clutch pedal? I gotta research this deal.

The "hydrualic setup" that he's referring to is just a clutch master cylinder (connected to the clutch pedal) and slave cylinder that are used to disengage the clutch.

The old SM465's used mechanical linkage rather than the hydraulic stuff that's on just about every manual trans vehicle from the 80's on up.

I would be looking for an NV4500 and I believe you'll want to find one from a 90's GM 1 ton truck. They can be tough to find. NV4500 swaps have been covered here a few times, a search will help you.

in the 80's chevy used hydraulic throwout bearings on the K5 (atleast my K5 has it) on its SM465.....my 79 donor truck that i had came with a mechanical linkage.....

If you wheel your rig on back roads every day, go for the NV4500. Buy a 95+ Chevy / GMC unit to get the internal slave cylinder. The external slave interferes with your front driveshaft unless you are lifted at least 4" The earlier Chevy external slave transmissions do have a bit of a deeper first gear, but the difference in the rest of the gearing is small enough that you probably wouldn't even notice.

Yep. Getting on some locations is a wheeling experience but most miles covered are on the blacktop. So the NV4500 sounds like the deal.
