Manual trans

huge gears and just a big old tranny with some play. a reman might help. but change the oil and run some oil additive if you want.

Hi i have the SM manual trans in my 88 k-5 and i was wondering when i go down the road i get like a whirly noise coming from the trans but in 3rd gear it goes away. What could this be.

Could be one of the bearings inside, but maybe a change of oil and some additives will cure it.
I put the heaviest gear oil plus the additives to make mine so quiet you'd think it's an auto. :D

What additives are you using?

I have been told by many people never to run additives in the SM465. It was designed for gear oil and only gear oil. Some new manual trannys run ATF or something similar, but that is not the best thing to run in an SM465.

What I used was what I found at Kragen at the time, dunno what it was.

As for running additives or not, no manufacturer will tell you wether you should or should not put additives, they don't want to be liable for anything.
And ATF was specified on mid 80's 465's that had the 241 or 208 behind them.
I wouldn't but it was the original fluid to be used.
Additives have come a long ways but there are also some bogus additives that could ruin your equipment.
I wouldn't use teflon in engines again but in a tranny I might...

I put extreme duty gear lube in, along with a bottle of that Lucas stuff that makes the oil climb the gears, and I have absolutely no syncro noises, or gear whine. Its almost strange driving that truck without it sounding like a school bus on a cold morning, lol

Then again, I did totally overhaul both the transmission and transfercase, so maybe that is contributing as well :)

atf in one ahead of a 208 is so that if a seal goes bad you dont have a gooey mix of atf and gear lube, a 208 will not work real well with that in it...
