Any idea's if a 1996 big block mark 5 motor is worth much? Its my back up motor for my truck- I don't know much about the later modle ones- Jess
I was told Gen VI will take V and IV heads with no problem.

Does it have an aluminum timing cover with 6 bolts? If it does then it is Gen VI, if not then it's a Gen V.
If the cam is flat then it's probably a Gen V. Why did it go flat? Did it wipe out the bearings? Make sure to find out before you put any money into it.
It's a good idea just to skip on the flat tappet cams because of the problems with current oil and flat cams. If you do run a flat tappet cam make sure you always run a good additive.
As far as my experience has been Gen 5 and 6 heads will go on Mark 4 blocks but not vice versa. Although I have heard of guys using mark 4 heads with a certain head gasket on gen 5 and 6 blocks. But it is hit or miss if the cooling passages line up good enough to seal.![]()

Can you change the cam between the Gen IV and Gen V?Ok, i just verfied in the GM Performance parts book that ALL 1996-newer Gen V and Gen VI use the aluminum timing cover with 6 bolts.
Also verified that the Gen V and Gen VI heads CANNOT be used on a Mark IV engine (at least without some work).
Can you change the cam between the Gen IV and Gen V?
My nephew has a 95 motor in his blazer and I have a new never used hydraulic roller (for a gen IV) we want to use for it.
Can we also use retrofit hydraulic rollor lifters for a Gen IV in a Gen V?
The cam and lifters is for the early BBC "Mark IV".Lets keep this correct, the first series of BBC was a Mark IV, then came the Gen V and later the Gen VI.
The hydraulic roller cam you have is for what series of engine? I'm not sure since you seem to be getting the series mixed up.
