Marvel mystery oil..... it slices, it dices, it chops......

Hey seriously though, what are yalls thoughts on this? Has anyone here had tueir own experiences using this stuff? Ive got a friends artic cat 500 atv im trying to un-stick the rings on. Ive heard many many times its good for that.... guess well see

it works good for that, like Adam said so does ATF.

Mix ATF and acetone 50/50 and fill te cylinders with it a day our two of letting it soak and the rings should break free

What about running it as an oil and gas additive in a running motor. Ive read some.horror stories about guys that end up clogging oil pumps and filters and burning up their motors after it loosens up years of gunk, and sludge.

I wouldn't be worried about running a detergent type cleaner in a fresher motor. But in one that's old, I wouldn't. That gunk, may be what's keeping stuff sealed up.

Thats kinda where im at. i dont think the motor has too many miles on it, but really, who the hell knows??? Im just going to assume the PO was full of shiz with pretty much everything that he told me about this thing....

He was right about one thing though.... its definatey a blazer

If it has that much gunk and crud in it the its already hosed.

Right before I pull an old engine to rebuild it I will drain the oil and fill it with diesel run it for about 20-30 seconds and drain it again its crazy how much crud you can knock loose makes disassembly much cleaner :haha:

I have used it for years to free up seized engines, and I have added a qt. to the crankcase after I was sure the engine wasn't sludged up badly (by pulling a valve cover off) after an oil change,it stopped a few engines from smoking shortly after adding it,and quieted noisy lifters...

I've used it on dozens of old small engines to un-seize them, and that is all my boss would let us use at the junkyard to get antique engines un-stuck...but usually he'd make us pull the oil pan off and see how much muck was in it first, and clean it all out and the oil pump screen, before trying to run one...

ANY additive similar to Marvel can destroy an old engine full of sludge ,especially antiques run on non-detergent oil from the days of old, that had a tendency to turn into sludge and carbon...many additives like Rislone, etc, get bad mouthed due to that, when the person using it should have checked to see how sludged up the engine was before using it...

I'm still on the fence as far as using ATF,its ok as a penetrant on stuck bolts, etc, but using it IN an engine could have harmfull effects because some types have friction additives and would act as a grinding compund on finely polished parts IMO...I have accidentally put a qt. in one engine I had and figured it was too late to do anything about it,and I haven't seen any ill effects ...yet!...I would put a new oil filter on the engine before adding marvel (I fill the new filter up with it),then after its been running a few hundred miles or hours,I changed the oil again...usually it looked like black paint!...

Pull the valve cover and see how much gunk there is

And to add another question to the OP's, how well does something run after it's been rusted together

I've used Seafoam for this with good results. As in - I could tell it ran smoother. I use the 3-way method. 1/3 of the can in the tank, 1/3 in the oil, and 1/3 vacuumed (slowly) into the intake while at a high idle. Let soak for 15 minutes (engine off) after you're done with the intake, then drive it until the smoke clears, then change the oil. Done. I do this every couple years.

There's tons of vidz on youtube about how to do it if interested.

Hopefully i can pick it up today from the trans shop. Today is my friday, and ive got big plans for it over the next twodays if they get it all finished up today. My plan with the mystery oil was to add 1/4 the recommended amount to the crank case. I just changed the oil and filter, so i figured id add some, drive it for a week to and from work, then change the oil again. You know, kind of take it really really slow getting this motor cleaned out. Ive built lots of quads and bikes (banshees, drag banshees, supermotos, etc) and my experience has taught me to establish a good baseline prior to a build. You cant know where to go, if you dont know where youre at, right??

I'm a fan of the Seafoam, same 3 way method. has keept my XJ running for 232K. plan on doing the same to the K5 once body work is completed on my build.

It worked on the four wheeler!!! Though, i wish id have known about that stuff on my drz400. The rings stuck in that, and i spent $400 on a big bore kit
