For those of you following my never-ending search for a K5, we may be nearing the end of the story. Kim and I looked at a 1990 Jimmy this afternoon, and other than a few strange rust issues(more on that below), the truck is solid, in very good shape with a mint interior, and runs very well.

The odd thing about this truck is that is has a couple of very rusty spots underneath, yet the rest of the truck is virtually rust free. And when I say rusty, I mean metal flaking on touch. I am familiar with the bad spots on K-series rigs, yet in my experience, when things start to get rusty in one spot, they get rusty everywhere.

This truck has four bad spots- whatever the support structures are called that are located on either corner of the floor pan below the rear seat are falling apart, the inner cab corners at that same location look pretty weak, and there is some minor rust at both sides of the tailpan and upwards along the tailgate opening. The weirdest is a full on rust though hole in the indent that houses the gas filler tube. Beyond this, the truck is virtually rust-free??? My old 84 had rust issues throughout the whole truck, but this 90 looks great other than what I've mentioned above. I would appreciate some serious input from CK5 body guys on how to take care of these areas.

Onto the pics:

Did it look like it has ever been repainted?

Did you take a pic of the rust hole in the gas filler area?

LMC sells that gas filler cover piece again now...takes care of one bad spot.

Looks not bad at all.

Weird...

Maybe those brackets got dipped at 4:55 on the friday before a long weekend and someone forgot to clean them properly? I swear Ive seen some very strange things on vehicles (Im sure we all have) where the only logical explanation is that QC went out the window in that instance.

Not too bad, Rene. Just weird how localized the rust is, when the rest of the truck looks solid?

How hard is it to cut out and install the filler neck cover? And are those floor structures vital? I'm considering grinding them off unless they're needed for structural integrity reasons........

If you go through the sheet metal resto stage of my thread, you will see i basically rebuilt those little support things. They were Swiss cheese.

My thoughts exactly. I'll swear up and down that the factory used some NOS parts on this build. There is no other explanation??????

I'll have to check that out, Adam. Don't be surprised if I start sending you PMs in the near future. All that aside, are these structures important? For the life of me, I can't see what purpose they serve....:dunno:

The gas filler is attached with screws and a gasket. Super easy to replace...

The tailpan area might just need to be taken to bare and see if it's solid enough to just re-paint. Doesn't look too bad yet.

The support areas are rebuildable. No weird shapes, just flat and square steel.

I'd probably jump on it.

Gonna keep it stock, or get rid of the weenie tires and gramma boards and make it a little more manly looking?

Great info, Rene. Thanks!!! The gas filler issue I'm referring to, however, is the sheet metal bump that is situated behind the spare tire in the inside rear. Doesn't look like a bolt in piece to me???? :dunno:

The plan is to install some 31s and let it ride. And yes, the running boards will be saying bye-bye within 4 hours of purchase. Maybe closer to 3........ :lmao:

Sweet rig other than the white walls and running boards.

What gears?
