Anyone know anything about them?
My buddy bought one for $500, 4 cyl, manual, seems to run pretty well. Little bit of rust, stock everything.

Its funny, no AC, no power steering, tho its not like an older car without it, not that hard, looks like it has some sort of assisted steering or something?

Its an 87 BTW.

Cant seem to find much on them online, anyone know anything??
Looking for something cheap with good gas mileage, and he said he would sell it to me for what he paid in a few weeks.

Thanks

IIRC, it's a rebadged Ranger -- or maybe Mazda made them for Ford, I donno.

Edit, might be Courier, whatever the small Ford pickup was at the time.

some of them were rotary's.....i think the earlier ones. Not this one?

Basically the rotary sucked as a truck engine, no low end torque.

Give it a tune up, change the fluids, drive it easy and itll last many many years. Take care of that rust otherwise itll spread quickly. I dont believe that older Mazda was in bed with ford yet. I could be mistaken. I know Dodge and mitsubishi had similar trucks around those years.

Mazda made them for Ford, and they were decent little trucks. No need for power steering because it doesn't have much weight over the front wheels. I remember a friend of mine had one he bought new in '87...basic, but a good vehicle IMO. No rotary by that timeframe, pretty standard OHC 4 cylinder.

Mazda made the older Rangers for Ford. Mazda trucks are good little trucks. I had one many years ago. It was a 2wd Ranger but made by Mazda. It was a good dependable little truck. I even towed my 14' fishing boat all over the place with it.
If it runs good and doesn't burn oil. It should make a good transportation truck.
I got around 22mpg in my old Ranger/Mazda.

I had an 83 b2000 for a while...didn't drive it much because it needed more work than I could afford at the time and I had other projects that were more important.

IIRC up til 83 the B2000 and the Courier were the same truck. After the small ranger came out, I'm not sure about the similarities/differences between the ford and mazda.

I did some reading and found out I was wrong.
Ford made the Mazda B series trucks here in America. Mazda and Ford are still partners on the small pickups.
The older Couriers like i had were imported. But when they changed the name to Ranger. Ford took over production of the Mazda B series trucks.

I had a 87 or 89 cant recall but it was the larger than courier days but also when they didnt looked like rangers. Wasent a bad truck, got decent mileage but it had a occasional smoke like a freight train on startup problem. Thing would run fine then fire it up and literally put out a smoke cloud down so bad you couldent see the truck in the haze. I cant remember if it was the cause, but I recall something about the "HLA`S" or hyduralic lifter assemblies that were factory defective or weak, seemed everytime I went to the dealer for parts it was the same story of factory defective.
Replacing them was over $50 each X 8 of them and the head gasket head to be replaced at time of replacement because the rocker studs were also head bolts. But hey for $500 and its decent what the heck.

Thanks alot everyone, so it seems like there are no Major problems with them, run for a long time, and for $500, I cant go wrong it seems, looks like i'll have a new DD soon, then the K5 can really be transformed into a toy. :)

That 87 B2200 is not a Ford Ranger based one . The Ford Courier is based on the older B series Mazda .

The 87 Mazda B truck is all Mazda , you ain't bolting any Thunderbird or SVO parts on that four banger :)

Although Ford has been in cahoots with Mazda since 1979 , The Ford Ranger based B trucks came out in 1994 to the present .

Its in the wiki :wink1:

What Pauly said :wink1: The Mazdas of that era are good pickups. For that matter, so are the Rangers.

Agreed...and pic's of the 87 B2200 and the 87 Ranger prove as much.

Gawd, you won't believe how many times folks came on www.TheRangerStation.com wanting to know if a lift for a TTB Ranger would fit their torsion bar B2200.:doah: Soooo many folks with confused info out there.

To simplify and clarify what was recently said:
IN THE USA/Canada (for the most part):
-70's-early 80's Ford Courier and Mazda whatever were Mazda made and designed.
-From '83 on the Ranger was all Ford. TTB front end in the 4x4's. Mazda was all Mazda, torsion bar IFS.
-'94-present the Mazda B series became a rebadged Ford Ranger.

This is in the US as overseas it's different depending on the region. There's been diesel powered crew cab Rangers in South America coming out of Brazil for over a decade now. Bastards.
