Mechanical Fuel Pump Won't Go Back On Help

I have finally got my carbed 350 engine to crank over. Problem I am having now is that I cannot get my fuel pump back on. When I try to mount it to the block. That little rod or lobe is in the way. I have tried to crank the engine to get it to move. I have also tried turning the bottom pulley with a socket wrench. What am I doing wrong :confused: It will not move either way. Do I need to turn it clockwise or counter clockwise. Thanks in advance
 
Here is what I have done. Put some grease on the rod that comes down to the fuel pump lever. Push the rod up into it's hole. The grease will hold it up there. If the rod won't go up far enough, you may have to turn the engine over some. Also put a little grease on the lever where the rod will contact it. This supplies some lube at start up. Now you're ready to put the pump in.

Another method is to use a bolt that is at the front of the engine to tighten against the rod to hold it up. I have never used this method since the grease always works.
 
If I recall, there is also a kind of a spacer plate under the fuel pump that can be removed for more access. You'll need a new gasket to reinstall the spacer plate.
 
The rod needs to be pushed up into the hole, it isn't attached to the cam, it just rides against it.

I used to have a bolt with some of the threads ground off on the tip (don't remember how far) so it didn't take as many turns to get it threaded in against the plunger. The grease works fine as long as the engine is cold, which in this case it would be.
 
I put a notch on mine where i could get a screwdriver to pry up on it. That way if it slipped i'd have somewhere to another another hold. Seemed to work. That and theres a hole on the front of the block to thread a bolt in to hold up the rod while you pull the pump. Just can't remember where
 
I used a flat head scredriver to hold the rod up and longer bolts.. you get a hard time if using short bolts.
 
Thanks to everyone finally got it on. I took the plate off and used a longer bolt to hold up the rod. Thanks again now I have a new problem.
 
Dont forget to put the short bolt or accesory bolt back in. Makes a hell of a mess that is kinda hard to track, BTDT. So, whats the new problem?
